Enrichment Hub Winter 2014 Classes

Times are listed in class description.  Production 3/28, after scheduled classes.  RSVP for this pot-luck event nearer the date.  Some of our children will be performing!  This is such a great way to show what they’ve learned to Daddy, Grandma, friend, etc. 

* Classes are held Fridays, 10 weeks, unless noted in description. 
* In case of inclement weather, please see Troy Schools for closings.  If they are closed for weather, so are we, as our building is on their schedule of weather closings.  We are not on their schedule for days off or vacations. 
* Classes are non-refundable and non-transferrable once registered, unless extreme circumstances.  Thank you for honoring the program and instructors in this manner.

Technical Drawing, 1:45-3:00, ages 13 & up, 9 weeks, $78 plus $14 supply fee
Do you love to draw in a technical way?  Learn the basics of drafting, creating 2D and 3D drawings in geometric construction and basic perspective.  As a final project, draw a building, house, or interior technical drawing perspective colored with water colors.  New and returning students welcome.  Note:  No class 3/28 (production day) Instructor:  Carmen Fernandez

Algebra in Reverse, 10:50, ages 13 & up, $58 plus $2 supply fee
In this class we will start by working on a solid foundation of fractions and prime numbers, and move on to equations, inequalities, and systems.  We will do problems in class instead of at home.  This is not to replace your home studies, but to have fun and enhance your learning in the Algebraic Math form.  Instructor:  Jared Piro

Art with Carmen, Self-Portrait, 10:50-12:00, ages 12 & up, $78 plus $16 supply fee
Get to know yourself through art.  What Season do you relate to as you make your self-portrait?  Artists will have the opportunity to learn how to draw faces and the human figure, as they reflect creatively with the season they identify with.  Draw the ideas, texture and paint with oil on stretched canvas in this fine arts class.  Instructor:  Carmen Fernandez, Architect and Artist

Literature Class, The Giver, 9:50, ages 12 & up, $58 (BYO book)
Students will read this book together and discuss the themes of what makes a perfect society.  Content is shocking (not for sex or language), discussion of dystopian literature, how to deal with bad memories, etc.  A movie based on this book is slated to be released in August of this year.  Bring your own book to class weekly.  Instructor:  Lisa Rathbun

Theatre Teens, 12:20, ages 12 & up, $72
Theatre couldn’t be more fun!  Work through games with an emphasis on exploring an actor’s approach to creating a character, script analysis and scene study leading to performance of a brief play in the E Hub Production!  New and returning students welcome to this amazing class with a fantastic producer/director/actor.  Instructor:  Gregory Trzascoma

IMPROV TEENS, 1:30-2:25, ages 12 & up, 9 weeks, $68
Learn a more rigorous exploration of that great American theatrical tradition, Improv., Historic Overview.  Glean from games and exercises for creating comedic and dramatic characters and scripts, freeing the actor's imagination, building ensemble, and honing concentration and focus.  Skills studied will be used in production at the end of the course.  New and returning students welcome.  Note:  No class 3/28 (production day).  Instructor:  Gregory Trzascoma

The Dark Genius of Edgar Allen Poe, 12:20-1:15, ages 12 & up, $58
A romantic period American author, poet, editor, and literary critic best known for his tales of mystery, Poe brings much to discuss in literature.  Students will discuss and explore the poetry and short stories of this famous writer.  Instructor:  Lisa Rathbun

Music Production (think Dubstep), 12:20-1:15, ages 12 & up, $86
Learn how to record and compose music on state of the art equipment that DJ's, live performers and studio engineers use.  You’ll be blown away at what you can produce!  Instructor:  homeschool graduate and artist, Paul Brymer

Computer Programming with PYTHON, 1:30-2:25, ages 12 & up, 9 weeks, $56, BYO Laptop
Python is a programming language that can be used on all major operating systems and on a variety of devices.  Unlike languages like C or Java, Python is considered a script language.  It is designed to be simple, general-purpose, and easy to use, so as to simplify tasks that would be more complicated in other languages.  In this class we will review and use this great program.  Note:  No class 3/28 (production day)  Instructor:  Jared Piro

Institute for Excellence in Writing Level C, Cont.   2:00-3:30, 9 weeks, 7th-11th gr, $99 Learn the continuation of stylistic techniques, key word outlining, note taking, grammar review, essay writing, business writing and ACT prep.  Students can finish earning 1/2 credit of high school composition.  Two books are needed: Student Writing Intensive Handouts C AND Student Writing Intensive Continuation Course Level C.  They can be purchased from the IEW Website.  Note:  No class 3/28 (production day) Instructor:  Debbye Rheker

Robotics, Programming (cars), 12:20, ages 12 & up, $58 plus $10 supply fee, BYO Laptop
In this class we'll use motors to propel small vehicles, and learn ways to control them using either switches or programmable microchips.  New and returning students welcome, we will continue learning new things each term.  Instructor:  Jared Piro

Wars of America, 10:50, ages 12 & up, $58
Take a relevant, fascinating look at some of the monumental struggles in America's history.  How did we get involved? What was at stake? What context in history, legacy and perhaps most important, moral lessons are to be learned? This course aims to show the truth of America's overall positive contributions to World history and when things are worth fighting for.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Doug Kuhn

Young Adult Entrepreneurs 10:50, ages 12 & up, $58
Study entrepreneurship and the principles of financial wizard, Dave Ramsey, while learning important skills in the area of money handling.  Learn how to keep track of money, forecast and budget, balance a checkbook and realize the true cost of debt.  Students will also create a mock business; track its finances, income/expenses and a subsequent profit and loss statement.  Instructor: Amy Boyer

Great Battles of American History, 12:20, ages 12 & up, $58
A factual insight into how a single event, individual, or sheer Providence can alter the course of such an important historical happening as a battle.  Each battle will be looked at in its historical context, influence on the course of war and overall impact on history itself, for both good or evil.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Doug Kuhn

Great American Leaders, 9:50, ages 12 & up, $58
This class will feature a look into the actual, incredible tales of great men and women who left us our special legacy here in America.  We will delve into how their character, God-given qualities and beliefs made them who they were and allowed them to impact history itself.  This course intends to teach the true stories that are often more fantastic than any tall tale could ever be.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Doug Kuhn

Song Composition, 9:50-10:45, ages 10 & up, $86
Learn the do's and don'ts of music, why we have a chorus, verses, etc., and how to use your personal creativity to make a song work.  Have fun discovering what a song is to you, and seeing the uniqueness you can bring to the world through music.  Instructor:  homeschool graduate and artist Paul Brymer

Candy Making, 9:50-10:45, ages 10 & up, $58 plus $28 supply fee
From our fantastic Cake Decorating instructor, learn the basics of candy making.   Process will include how to work with candy, using molds, dipping, molding candy clay and more.  Each week student will take home their completed project.  Instructor:  Cindy Giraud

Myth Debunkers, 9:50-10:45, ages 9 & up, $58 + $5
In this class, we will be conducting new experiments to determine if things we’ve accepted as fact are really true.  Patterned after the Discovery Channel hit series, “Myth Busters” (less the explosives) but on a smaller scale.  We will teach accepted scientific methods for conducting experiments and analyzing data.  Instructor:  Jared Piro

Art with Carmen, 4 Seasons, 9:30-10:45, ages 9 & up, $78 plus $18 supply
Artists will have the opportunity to create and design on 4 canvases a picture that will reflect the four seasons as they learn to mix the colors of each one!  Draw the ideas, texture and paint with oil on stretched canvas in this fine arts class.  Instructor:  Carmen Fernandez, Architect and Artist

Art with Carmen, Acrylics, 12:20-1:35, ages 9 & up, $78 plus $16 supply fee

Cross Fit, 1:30-2:25, ages 9-13, 9 weeks, $56
Grow up healthy and strong with a lifelong love of working out, thus avoiding the common problems associated with childhood inactivity and obesity!  Children will push, pull, run, throw, climb, lift, jump, effectively and safely, regardless of whether or not they play athletics.  During this program, the coach will educate your child on the importance of making their bodies powerful, enriching their minds, building strong character, creating rewarding experiences, and developing a sense of pride.  We require that kids wear tennis shoes for this program.  Parents welcome!  New and returning students welcome.  Note:  No class 3/28 (production day)  Instructor:  Jeremey Ouellette

Recorder Karate, 1:30-2:25, ages 9 & up, $56 plus $5, BYO Recorder
Recorders:  just about everyone has one, but no one knows how to play it!  Are you tired of just squeaking on your recorder?  Do you want to learn an instrument that will help you with most band instruments?  Do you want to learn the basics of note reading?  Recorder Karate will teach the basics of how to play the recorder, while having fun, being competitive, and earning belts for your recorder!  Note:  No class 3/28 (production day).  Instructor:  Regina Holben

Machine Sew, 1:30-2:30, ages 8 & up, $67 plus fabric (BELOW) and $15
Learn how to ready a pattern and follow its directions in this sewing class.  We will make a wonder bag to take home, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/01/02/wonderbag-slow-cook-video_n_4532485.html, along with great knowledge of how to sew.   Required tools for this class:  Sewing machine that works, thread, pins, fabric scissors, measuring tape.  Purchase ahead and bring to FIRST class:  1 ½ yards of 100% cotton (color A), 1 ½ yards of coordinating cotton fabric (color B).  Fabric brought to class the first day MUST be WASHED, DRIED (with NO Fabric softener) and IRONED well.  No exceptions.  Thank you.  Note:  No class 3/28 (production day).  Instructor:  Tessa Hawkes

Sing Out!  12:20, ages 8 and up, $58 plus $10
If you enjoy singing and dancing like Glee, American Idol, High School Musical, and The Sing-Off, then this class is for you.  We will learn to sing and dance while having a great time.  Even if you’ve never been in a show choir before, think you sing like a frog, this class is for you!  This summer, Sing Out even performed in the 4H fair!  Come dressed to move.  Students may have opportunities to sing at other local events in the community.  Come dressed for movement.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor: Gina Holben

True Stories Behind Great Kids’ Movies, 1:30-2:25, ages 8-13, 9 weeks, $56 + $3 supply
What really happened to many great movie characters?  Students will learn the surprisingly different history behind Pocahontas, Mulan, Anastasia, The Sound of Music, Robin Hood, and other kids’ movies.  Note:  No class 3/28 (production day)  Instructor:  Lisa Rathbun

Cake Decorating, 10:50, ages 8 & up, $58 plus $35 supply fee
Learn the basics of cake decorating, from applying icing to designing a cake.  From different borders, several flowers, figure piping, & more, students will learn different techniques.  Students will bring home cakes & cupcakes on specific weeks, and will display their final cake during production before bringing it home to enjoy.  Instructor:  Cindy Giraud

Guitar, Group Lessons, 10:50, 12:20, ages 8 & up, $72
A group guitar class including tuning, notation, chords, strumming patterns, and more!  Beginners and beyond are welcome.   Acoustic/electric reviewed.  Bring your own guitar, or recommendations for rental are available.  New and returning students always welcome.  Instructor:  Neal Wright

Minion or Monster Crocheting!  9:50-10:45, ages 8 & up, $72 plus $15 supply fee
Learn how to make a warm scarf!  Choose from either Sully or Mike from Monsters, Inc., or a minion scarf from despicable me!  Supply fee covers crochet hook and yarn needed for one project.  Student must email in advance what scarf they would like to make so that the instructor can have the correct color yarn on the first day of class.  If not able to email in, instructor will choose for you.  Instructor:  Tessa Hawkes

Crafting Corner, 12:20-1:15, ages 8 & up, $72 plus $10 supply fee
Let’s get crafty!  Learn how to create a variety of hair bows and accessories as fine as you would see at any craft bazaar, or all those great crafty ideas you see on pinterest.  We will be working with glue guns and hand sewing for this class.  Instructor:  Tessa Hawkes

Drum/Ear Training, 10:50-11:45, ages 8 & up, $86
Drumming is a fantastic outlet and an amazing form of expression, along with being the basis for almost all music types.  Learn about the drum kit, play and share with group lessons and grow your potential in this rhythmic class.  Instructor:  homescool graduate and artist, Paul Brymer

Creative Writing Prompts, 10:50-11:45, ages 8-11, $58
Students will be working together to write and tell stories and get them down on paper to share with others.  The class focus will be on story-telling and the creation of stories.  The instructor will employ dictation and recording during class to show students how their ideas can become stories without struggles.  This class is ideal for those who have great imaginations and/or those who have not enjoyed writing in the past.  Each student will be allowed to progress at their own level.  Instructor:  Jo Anne Kroll

Hip Hop!  Intermediate and Up, 10:50, ages 8 & up, $72
Experience requested.  Let’s move!  An awesome class for all, with clean lyrics!  In hip-hop we will be focusing on the rhythm and the beat of the music, coordinating our movements to go with that beat, and incorporating other styles of dance.  Please wear comfortable fitting shorts/pants and t-shirts with clean tennis shoes or jazz shoes.  Instructor:  Jennifer Combs

Hip Hop/Broadway Mix, Street Moves, 12:20, ages 7 & up, $72
An awesome class for all, with clean lyrics!  We will incorporate the hip hop/street style moves with Broadway style and perform songs from some of the latest Broadway hits like “The Heights” or “Newsies”.  Please wear comfortable fitting shorts/pants and t-shirts with clean tennis shoes or jazz shoes.  Instructor:  Jennifer Combs

Highland Dance with Mrs. Jen, 9:50, ages 7 & up, $72
We’re so excited Mrs. Jen is bringing us Highland Dance, her national winning class!  Want to try something new that is upbeat, fun and involves lots of jumping around?  Highland Dance might be for you!  Learn the steps to several traditional Scottish Dances including a dance with SWORDS!  Fun for boys and girls.  Please wear socks or soft sole dance shoes (dance or ballet), shorts or leggings and t-shirts (NO long baggy pants, as they get caught in the movements).  Instructor:  Jennifer Combs

Chess, Intermediate to Advanced, 12:20, ages 7-14, 9 weeks, $56
If students have taken more than two chess classes with Alexander, they should take this class.  We will review in order to assess how well students remember previous material, and then we will delve into more complicated ideas.  Chess sets and clocks provided.  Workbook is $10, if needed (most students should have theirs from past classes.  Note:  No class 3/14.  Instructor: Alexander Deatrick, US Chess Expert

Chess, Beginner to Intermediate, 1:35-2:20, ages 7-14, 9 weeks, $56 plus $10
Each class will involve playing chess with instructor giving advice, group instruction of chess tactics, and introduction of tournament rules.  Students will learn the proper use of a chess clock and how to record a chess game (chess sets and clocks provided weekly).   Homework of 15 min. per week will be given.  No experience required, but also appropriate for students who know how to play chess, or have taken one or two classes from Alexander.  Note:  No class 3/14.  Instructor: Alexander Deatrick, US Chess Expert

The Horse and His Boy, 10:50-11:45, ages 7-12, $58 plus $2 supply fee
Talking Horses, Dangerous Lions, Kids on the run!  This book from the Chronicles of Narnia is not only exciting, it teaches important moral lessons about courage, responsibility, and acceptance.  Instructor:  Lisa Rathbun

American History with Kirsten, 12:20, ages 6 & up, $58 plus $6 supply fee
Each week we will read and encompass a portion of "Meet Kirsten" the American girl who grew up during the mid-1800’s.  We will make pioneer crafts as a class and learn about schooling during the time period, listen to music from the era and study cultural differences and family traditions.  The final class will include a traditions party, allowing each girl to share her own cultural and family traditions with the class.  Instructor:  Jo Anne Kroll

Cooking 4 Kids, 1:30-2:25, ages 6-10, $58 plus $8 supply fee
This class will focus on simple meals and snacks your child can create with little or no parental help.  Safety, hygiene and responsibility go hand in hand with the food groups in this class.  We will make a different recipe each week.  Note:  No class 3/28 (production day).  Instructor:  JoAnne Kroll

Spanish Fun Continues, 9:50, ages 5-9, $58
Continued from fall 2013, students are welcome to grow their knowledge in a fun, easy, and interesting way with visuals, games, books, etc.  Whether your child knows a little Spanish or a lot, they will enjoy this class.  Formerly from Guatemala, been here since 1996, a U.S. citizen, and giving back in the community by teaching others her mother tongue.  Her motto, “Learn a little, use it a lot,” will help students grow in their Spanish language.   Instructor, Carolina Hood

We’ve Got the Beat! 9:50, ages 5-9, $58 plus $5 supply fee
Music, rhythm and fun combine together in this class! Students will sing, dance, play instruments, play games, and have a great time, all while learning the basics of music!  The material is new every semester, so feel free to sign your child up again and again! This class will perform for parents in a class or may perform at production.  Instructor: Gina Holben

Early Scientists, 10:50, ages 5-9, $58 plus $10 supply fee
Through lots of hands on science activities we will learn about the four seasons, and many other fun science facts.  Come ready to learn!  Instructor:  Cristy Moreno

Arts & Crafts, 1:30-2:25, ages 4-8, 9 weeks, $56 plus $10 supply fee
We will work on a fun new craft every week using many different mediums.  Come ready to get a bit crafty!  Rolling up your sleeves and bringing one of your dad’s old t-shirts to wear is a great cover up idea.  Note:  No class 3/28 (production day).  Instructor:  Cristie Moreno

Early Math Fun, 12:20-1:15, ages 3-7, $58 plus $10 supply fee
Come learn math through art, games, and creative movement.  Use fine motor, gross motor, team work and senses to remember these fun math lessons.  Instructor, Cristie Moreno

My First Science Classes, 12:20, ages 3-6, $58 plus $5 supply fee
Your child(ren) will have fun through discovery, in a science class designed just for them.  Students will discover more about their everyday world, using age-appropriate and safe items.  New and returning students welcome, as science lessons are different each term.  Instructor:  Roseanna Ondra

Tots Ballet, 1:20-1:50, ages 3-6, $72
Tots Ballet is an adorable class for young children who may or may not have experience in dance.  Ballet technique is the foundation for every style of dance; jazz, modern, ballroom, and even hip-hop!  Girls: Pink or black Leotard, Pink or white Tights, Ballet Shoes.  Boys: White T-Shirt, black light cotton pants (no sweats), ballet shoes.  All long hair pulled back securely in a ponytail or bun, please no hair in face.  Instructor:  Jennifer Combs

More Adventures in Literature, 10:50, ages 3–6, $58
Each week we'll enjoy the adventures of a classic children's book, and then enjoy activities that go along with our story.  We'll play games, create art projects and explore social studies, math and science concepts from the story.  Always a new subject, every term!  Instructor:  Amanda Gehrke

Tiny Tot Tap, 10:50, ages 3-6, $58
This fun class will give young children the feel of making music with their feet!  Children will learn several tap routines to fun rhymes and music, and will learn a performance dance for the production!  Street clothes or dance attire are both acceptable.  Long hair should be secured out of face.  Any color tap shoes are required, but instructor may have a pair your student can borrow for the term.  New and returning students welcome!  Instructor:  Deanna Irwin

Broadway Babies, 9:50, ages 3-5, $58
Combine music, dance and drama into one class.  We will sing songs, play with instruments and learn the basics of dance for theater.  In class we will act out Bible stories and songs to learn some of the basics of drama.  This class is for the youngest performer and will be adapted to meet the needs of the students in the class.  The primary goal is feeling comfortable on stage and having a great time.  Parents are welcome to attend with their children to make this class a great experience.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Jo Anne Kroll

French for Tots (and Parents!), 9:50, ages 2-6, $58 + $4 supply fee
New and Returning Students: Come learn in a full-immersion French class through a variety of proven methods to teach kids to understand, and ultimately speak, a new language.  These adventure-filled lessons incorporate storytelling, music, movement, art and dramatic play.  Basic grammar will also be introduced at the Elementary Level.  Instructor:  Roseanna Ondra
