Enrichment Hub Fall 2010 Classes, by age/class (guideline ages):

Friday classes, weekly, at Kensington Church in Troy. Christ-centered classes, open to all.

Public Speaking for Today, 12:20, 10th-12th grade, $55 plus $3 supply fee

Students will learn how to develop confidence in communication through listening activities, research, and public speaking in the classroom. In this PS 101 class, students focus on reading with meaning and talking with the body. Speeches delivered by the students will include the following: Introduction Speech, Interview speech, Personal Experience speech, and "How-To" speech. Students must complete the 101 class before taking the 102 class offered in the second semester. Please bring a 3 ring binder or folder, notebook, pen, and colored pencils (blue, red, black & green) to each class. Instructor: Katie Beth Hostetter

College Prep – Focus on Skills, 9:50, 10th-12th grade, 9 weeks, $49

Learn with other teens how to facilitate study skills in order to excel in a college setting. Learn various methods of note taking and outlining to determine which method is best for your learning style. We will go over examples of abbreviations and short hand techniques. We will also discuss plagiarism versus paraphrasing. Assignments will coincide with each week’s topic. Instructor: Tracey Cooley Kevelighan, attorney & home school mom.

Sculptural Art: 9:50, ages 11 & up, $68 plus $25 supply fee

In this class, classic as well as conceptual sculpture will be discussed and looked at through masters in sculpture in history. Well will learn about form, line, texture, symbolism, and metaphor in art, writing, music and sculpture. We will start out our work in wire to form the human figure. We will follow with projects that involve found objects and alternative materials to build and sculpt as we put our concepts and ideas into 3 dimensional form. This class not only teaches an artistic skill, but expands the student's mind to think more openly and creatively in art, writing, music and life. Instructor: Karen Walby

Drawing I & II with Pencil, 10:50, ages 11 & up, $68 plus $10 supply fee

Calling all art students, from beginner to advanced. This class will cover the fine points of drawing needed in any beginner art student's education: drawing from observation of still life, shading & highlighting, tonality, perspective and the use of pencil as a medium for drawing. We will use contour and gesture drawing exercises designed to train the eye for observation. For advanced students, we will be taking those lessons, and apply them to more complicated still life drawings, while crisping up our darks and lights, and drawing capabilities to bring out a more 3 dimensional effect. Any students that would like to further their drawing skills in pastel, instead of pencil, are welcome to come study the Pencil student’s still-lives in pastel instead or set up a still-life of their own. As usual, we will review the art work of other artists of present and past that apply to our studies. Instructor: Karen Walby

Ministry in Production, 9:50, ages 12 through adult, $55

This class focus is not on tech, but on people, and more importantly, ministry. This class addresses the issues of integration of ministry into the church technical environment and how tech volunteers and staff can remain connected in the Bible and connected to the Body of Christ, not just the corporate church. Instructor: Matt Inskeep

Cake Decorating, 12:20, ages 12 & up, including adults! $55 plus supply fee

Learn the basics of cake decorating, from applying icing to designing a cake. From different borders, several flowers, figure piping, & more, students will learn different techniques. On the last class, students will display their cakes during production, and bring home their beautifully decorated cake. Instructor: Cindy Giraud

Cross Fit Teens, 9:50, ages 12 & up, parents welcome! $55

CrossFit Kids is the principal strength and conditioning program for many young athletic teams, martial arts schools and many parents. It helps kids grow up healthy, strong with a life long love of working out, thus avoiding the common problems associated with childhood inactivity and obesity. Our program delivers fitness that is broad, general and inclusive, requiring that our kids push, pull, run, throw, climb, lift, jump, effectively and safely, regardless of whether or not they play athletics. Your kids are unique! So we’ve developed a program to match that is structured to be creative, fun and challenging, corresponding to the skills and sensitivities of the students. During this program, the coaches will educate your child on the importance of making their bodies powerful, enriching their minds, building strong character, creating rewarding experiences, and developing a sense of pride. We require that kids wear tennis shoes for this program. Instructor: Marnie Williams

Intro to Chinese (Mandarin), 12:20, ages 12 & up, $55 plus $4 supply fee

Learn basic greetings, numbers, colors and familial relationships, and how to speak, read and write the above ideas. We will celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, and surrounding folk tales, on 10/1, after classes, from 1:30 – 3p.m. China is as large as much of Europe, and like Europe, has vastly different languages. In the past, these Chinese “languages” have been referred to as dialects. The spoken word between provinces is vastly different, to the point of being mutually unintelligible. The written word is the same everywhere. Long ago, the Chinese emperors recognized this problem and created a trade dialect called Mandarin. This enabled merchants to more easily trade goods from one end of the country to the other. I will be teaching Mandarin, the trade dialect, and Mainland China’s simplified characters. Creative Report Writing, 10:50, ages 11-14, $55

Getting your thoughts and ideas on paper in a logical, yet creative and fun, way can be challenging. This class will help students get those amazing ideas and stories out of their heads and onto paper in a variety of exercises. We will also research information that interests us, outline, write drafts, edit, fine-tune, and create a paper that presents the students’ information in a way that is interesting to others. Teen Ceramics, 10:50, ages 11 & up, 9 weeks, $62 plus $10 supply fee

Students in this class will be guided in developing both sculptural and functional ceramic pieces while learning about clay and hand building techniques. Students will be offered projects that will allow them to explore the material while developing their own "voice" to put into their pieces. Note: no ceramic class 10/1. Instructor: Tracey Priska

Speak Out! 12:20, ages 11-14, $55

Every one of us will need to speak publically at some point in our lives…and some of us are really uncomfortable with that. This class is designed to help students, become comfortable speaking in public through a variety of exercises, memorization and working with notes. Instructor: Michelle McCoy

Passport to French Fun, 10:50, ages 11 & up, 9 weeks, $49

Pack your bags and grab your ticket to the French speaking world! You’ll sing, act, and play your way around France, Quebec, Africa, and the Caribbean. Learn basic communication, useful phrases, geography, and a little grammar in a cultural, immersion setting. Weekly handouts and podcasts will help you practice French at home. Note: no French class on 10/1. Instructor: Diane Farrug

P.A. Boot Camp, 9:50, 12:20, ages 10 & up, $55

Get a first glance at production, and what it has to offer. Gain valuable information and insight into the life of a PA (Production Assistant). Gain the knowledge and understanding needed to operate the basics, as well as some advanced features of production including but not limited to Audio, Video, Lighting, Camera Operation, and Staging. More advanced students also welcome, and will assist in all technical aspects of the closing program. Instructor: Matt Inskeep

Music Theory, 10:50, ages 10 & up, $68 plus $8 supply fee

“Scripture Notes, music puzzles set to the word of God.” Enhance your ability to read music, play an instrument, and learn Scripture by this fun means of education. Students will fill out puzzles, read answers and see how it relates to playing an instrument. Instructor: Matt Bono

Piano, Group, 9:50, ages 10 & up, $68 plus $9 book fee

Drama! 10:50, ages 9–16, $55

A fun Drama class of verbal and non-verbal communication form. Students will come up with their own ideas of who, what, where, creative situations, character development, pantomime, facial expressions and gestures, creating a script through this fashion. Skills mastered will be used in production at the end of course. Instructor: Katie Beth Hostetter, Director of Urban Arts, Detroit.

Vocal Technique, 9:50, ages 9 & up, $55

Want to improve your vocal skills? The focus for this class is on pitch accuracy, breath control, projection, basic anatomy of the voice, and vocal health. We will use fun and easy vocal exercises to help in our daily recognition of pitch, while growing as singers. Every week we will be singing in front of our peers and learning how to give constructive criticism to help us grow as individual teachers (under the teachers supervision, advice will only be positive and guiding to the student). At the conclusion of our semester, there will be a performance in front of your peers. Field trip at the end of the semester. All ability levels welcome! Instructor, Sara Aylesworth

Teen ASL (American Sign Language), 9:50, ages 11-adult, $55

Take this awesome class with your family, or without. Based on American Sign Language, learn or continue learning a new language to reach your community. What a wonderful addition to your homeschooling journey. Instructor: Deb Weathers-Jablonski

Intro to Biology Lab, 9:50, ages 10-14, $55 + $5 lab fee

This class will go from general plant and animal parts and their classification to specific. We will then move into the cells of animals and introduce the difference between plant cells and animal cells, asking students to compare them. Please note, this will include nature hikes, weather permitting, so that the students can pick some of their own samples of what they have/are learning. Students who have their own microscopes (not a must have), please bring them to class on Fridays, to keep the price of the class at a minimum, and learn how to use them. Art with Carmen
, ages 9 & up, 10:30-11:45, or 12:20-1:35, $77 plus $10 supply fee

Experience the beauty that unfolds when you draw, prepare wood to paint, add textures, mix colors and paint! Technique: oil and textures on wood. Note class is hour and 15 minutes. Instructor: Carmen Fernandez, Arquitect and amazing art instructor for 20 years.

Beginner Snare Drum Lessons, 12:20, ages 9-12, $55 plus book fee.

Learn basic fundamentals of playing snare drums. Drum pad and SD1 general drumsticks will be necessary for the class. Instructor: Grant Kendricks

Hip Hop! Intermediate, 10:50, ages 8 & up, $68

Some experience requested. Let’s move! An awesome class for all, with clean lyrics! In hip-hop we will be focusing on the rhythm and the beat of the music and coordinating our movements to go with that beat, incorporating other styles of dance. Please wear comfortable fitting shorts/pants and t-shirts with clean tennis shoes or jazz shoes. Instructor: Jennifer Pierson

A group guitar class including tuning, notation, chords, strumming patterns & more! Beginners and beyond are welcome. Acoustic/electric reviewed. Bring your own guitar, or recommendations for rental are available. Instructor: Neal Wright.

Contemporary Jazz, 9:50, ages 6 & up, $68

From Broadway to the movies, jazz has can be found anywhere. Come and begin learning some fun steps to do around the room and to put together into full-length dances. We will dance and get some energy out! Attire: Girls—“yoga” pants or tights and leotard, jazz or ballet shoes. Boys—t-shirt and athletic shorts, jazz shoes. All long hair pulled back securely, please no hair in face. Instructor: Jen Pierson

World Travelers, 12:20, ages 7 & up, $55 plus $5 supply fee.

Learn about children around the world, discovering similarities to and differences from you. Using the globe, maps, books, photographs, and more, we will learn interesting things about the culture, famous landmarks, geography, & climate of each country. We’ll explore United States, Mexico, China, India, Egypt, Brazil, and others. Each student will have their own “World Traveler Passport” notebook that we will work on as a group. No reading is required, but students will need some basic handwriting and scissor skills as there will be some writing and cut-and-paste activities for their passports. American Girl Sewing, 9:50, or 10:50, ages 7-11, $55 plus $4 supply fee

Come learn the basics of hand sewing and more, while being read the first Felicity book in the American Girl series. We will discuss the 1700’s, and how most people made their own clothes along with other comparisons from then to now. Students will make their very own pin cushion to keep their needle on, then make their own pillow and apron. Instructor: Gabrielle Lucido

Spiritual Pathways, 9:50, ages 7 & up, $55

People don’t always access God in the same way. In fact, there are various ways in which we can feel God’s presence in our lives. Some of us experience God relationally, through nature, through song, and prayer. We will learn abut the importance of the spiritual pathway and how to develop them in our everyday lives. French for Kids, 12:20, ages 7-10, 9 weeks, $49

Learn French through games, stories, drama, crafts, and songs! You’ll learn basic communication skills as you discover French culture in a fun, immersion setting. Weekly handouts and podcasts will help you practice French at home. Note: no French class on 10/1. Instructor: Diane Farrug

Musical Ears, 10:50, ages 6–17, $55

Musical Ears is a class meant to grow young students interested in progressing in their musical understanding. We will work on a variety of different ear training exercises at all levels. Learn the difference between major and minor scales, their 7 modes, the 4 different chord qualities, the 12 musical intervals along with melodic dictation. Come join us as you prepare to grow as an amazing musician! Instructor, Sara Aylesworth

Superstar! 9:50, ages 6–12, $55

Encourage “God-esteem” through performing arts by celebrating the unique talents of each child. This class will incorporate music, drama and dance with Scripture celebrating the way God made us. We are all superstars in His eyes! We will perform a short version of the Nativity story, celebrating the “Star” of Christmas. Instructor: Jo Anne Kroll

Beginning Baton Twirling, 12:20, ages 6-12, $55 plus Baton, if needed

Learn basic baton twirls in a stress free setting! We will focus on flats, flourishes, and figure eights, then put them together in a fun parade-style routine for the recital. Bring your own baton, or ask what style to purchase. Instructor: JoAnne Kroll

Youth Ceramics, 9:50, ages 6–10, 9 weeks, $62 plus $10 supply fee

In this class students learn how to shape clay using basic hand building techniques. We will be exploring the use of slabs, coils and pinch pots to make both functional and sculptural pieces and allowing room for personal exploration & discovery. Note: no ceramics class 10/1. Elementary Geology & Astronomy, 10:50, ages 5-10, $55

Learn what the earth is made of, the importance of water, how glaciers are made, and how volcanoes make islands (such as Hawaii). We’ll use our new understanding of how the earth was made and shift our attention to space, and how many of the elements found on earth are also found in space. We will discuss the different planets in our solar system, and then expand to the different kinds of galaxies, including our own. This will be a very hands-on class with plenty of take-home projects. Note: If your family lives further out and has a clear vantage for star-gazing, talk to instructor about a possible field trip to your back yard! Instructor: Alethea Gurabardhi

Praise and Worship! (PAW), 10:50, ages 5 & up, $55

We are called to worship God with every action, every day of our life. A life of praise and worship fills our deepest needs, and amazingly, it also brings great joy to God. In this class, children will explore a variety of different ways to worship including singing, playing instruments, creative prayer, dance, scripture, and other creative expression. Heroes of the Bible, 12:20, ages 4-10, $55

Examine the lives of some famous and not-so-famous people who had willing hearts to obey God. And by obeying him, they were used in miraculous and powerful ways to help change the course of human history! It is the goal of this class to build FAITH, COURAGE, and OBEDIENCE in the lives of children, and to change the world for Jesus. Instructor: Ashley Verville

French to Say and Play, 9:50, ages 3-6, 9 weeks, $49

Introduce your child to the French language in a fun, natural, play-based setting. Age-appropriate activities include lots of movement, music, storytelling, finger plays, puppetry, drama, coloring, and crafts. Parents welcome and encouraged to stay. Parents will receive lots of resources to encourage kids to speak French at mealtime, playtime, and bedtime! Note: no French class on 10/1. Instructor: Diane Farrug

Pre K Adventures in Literature, 10:50, ages 3–6, $55

Each week we'll enjoy the adventures of a classic children's book. After story time we'll enjoy activities that go along with our story of the week. We'll play games, create art projects and explore social studies, math and science concepts from the story. Instructor: Amanda Gehrke

Creative Arts & Crafts, 9:50, ages 3-6, 9:50, $55 plus $5 supply fee

This will be a fun and creative class for the little ones! The children will enjoy making their own creative projects, exploring arts and crafts at their level. We will be using a variety of different textures and techniques. Instructor: Jenny Barclay

Tots Ballet, 12:20, ages 3-5, $68

Tots Ballet is an adorable class for young children who may or may not have experience in dance. Ballet technique is the foundation for every style of dance; jazz, modern, ballroom, and even hip-hop! Girls: Pink or black Leotard, Pink or white Tights, Ballet and Tap Shoes. Boys: White T-Shirt, Black light cotton pants (no sweats), ballet shoes. All long hair pulled back securely in a ponytail or bun, please no hair in face. Instructor: Jennifer Pierson.

Broadway Babies, 10:50, ages 3–5, $55

Music and Dance and Drama, oh, my! Children will have an exploration of music through singing and listening, dance through choreography, and drama through skits and stories. We will be acting out a song for our Christmas performance. Instructor: JoAnne Kroll

Violin, Private, ask for times, ages 4 & up, $15/lesson.

Fine arts instructor Katie Beth offers lessons in a mix of the Suzuki method, performance technique, and traditional method. Bring your violin, or recommendations for rental are available. Instructor: Katie Beth Hostetter, Director of Urban Arts, Detroit
