Enrichment Hub Spring 2014 Class Descriptions

Times are listed in class description.  Open House 6/13, during scheduled classes.  This is such a great way to show what they’ve learned to Daddy, Grandma, friend, etc., in their classrooms.

* Classes are held Fridays, 5 weeks, unless noted in description.  
* In case of inclement weather, please see Troy Schools for closings.  If they are closed for weather, so are we, as our building is on their schedule of weather closings.  We are not on their schedule for days off or vacations.  
* Classes are non-refundable and non-transferrable once registered, unless extreme circumstances.  Thank you for honoring the program and instructors in this manner.
* Registration is required in advance to ensure your child’s placement, to ensure classes run, and to prepare the instructor for their class.  Enrollment is based on first come, first serve basis.  See registration form for details.

High School Chemistry, Part 2, 10:50-11:45, ages 13 & up, $29 plus $10 supply fee
In this class, we will extend the introduction to chemistry class that was taught in the fall term, in order to allow students the opportunity to get a full credit in Chemistry.  This class will be built on skills learned in the fall term.  Instructor:  Tracy Mitton

Algebra in Reverse, 12:20-1:15, ages 13 & up, $29 plus $2 supply fee
In this class we will start by working on a solid foundation of fractions and prime numbers, and move on to equations, inequalities, and systems.  We will do problems in class instead of at home.  This is not to replace your home studies, but to have fun and enhance your learning in the Algebraic Math form.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Jared Piro

IMPROV TEENS, 9:50-10:45, ages 12 & up, $38
Learn a more rigorous exploration of that great American theatrical tradition, Improv., Historic Overview.  Glean from games and exercises for creating comedic and dramatic characters and scripts, freeing the actor's imagination, building ensemble, and honing concentration and focus.  New and returning students welcome to grow your skills in improv.  Instructor:  Gregory Trzascoma

Music Production (think Dubstep), 12:20-1:15, ages 12 & up, $45
Learn how to record and compose music on state of the art equipment that DJ's, live performers and studio engineers use.  You’ll be blown away at what you can produce!  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Paul Brymer

Computer Programming with PYTHON, Cont. 1:30-2:25, ages 12 & up, $29, BYO Laptop
Python is a programming language that can be used on all major operating systems and on a variety of devices.  Unlike languages like C or Java, Python is considered a script language.  It is designed to be simple, general-purpose, and easy to use, so as to simplify tasks that would be more complicated in other languages.  New and returning students welcome in this continued class.  Instructor:  Jared Piro

Robotics, Programming 10:50-11:45, ages 12 & up, $29 plus $10 supply fee, BYO Laptop
In this continuing class we'll use motors to propel small vehicles, and learn ways to control them using either switches or programmable microchips.  New and returning students welcome, we will continue learning new things each term.  Instructor:  Jared Piro

Teen/Adult Christ-Centered Yoga 12:20-1:15, ages 12 & up, $29, BYO Mat
Gentle stretching and balance, only exert as much as you’re able!  Breathing and meditating on God’s word, with an experienced “Chogi”, Roseanna’s term for a Christian Yogi.  Instructor:  Roseanna Ondra

Words of Warning, 12:20-1:15, ages 12 & up, $29, BYO Book
The serious side of Science Fiction.  Explore Ray Bradbury’s fascinating and fun short stories and discover that science fiction is not just far-fetched escapism but often a chance to envision the potential impact scientific development might have on society.  Students need access to Bradbury’s short stories (online or from a library).  Instructor:  Lisa Rathbun

Song Composition, 9:50-10:45, ages 12 & up, $45
Learn the do's and don'ts of music, why we have a chorus, verses, etc., and how to use your personal creativity to make a song work.  Have fun discovering what a song is to you, and seeing the uniqueness you can bring to the world through music.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Paul Brymer

Wars of America, 12:20, ages 12 & up, $29
Take a relevant, fascinating look at some of the monumental struggles in America's history.  How did we get involved? What was at stake? What context in history, legacy and perhaps most important, moral lessons are to be learned? This course aims to show the truth of America's overall positive contributions to World history and when things are worth fighting for.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Doug Kuhn

Great Battles of American History, 9:50, ages 12 & up, $29
A factual insight into how a single event, individual, or sheer Providence can alter the course of such an important historical happening as a battle.  Each battle will be looked at in its historical context, influence on the course of war and overall impact on history itself, for both good or evil.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Doug Kuhn

Great American Leaders, 10:50, ages 12 & up, $29
This class will feature a look into the actual, incredible tales of great men and women who left us our special legacy here in America.  We will delve into how their character, God-given qualities and beliefs made them who they were and allowed them to impact history itself.  This course intends to teach the true stories that are often more fantastic than any tall tale could ever be.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Doug Kuhn

More Middle School Chemistry 9:50, ages 10-14, $29 plus $8 supply fee
Students will expand their knowledge of chemistry through participation in more advanced experiments.  An understanding of basic chemistry is recommended, but not essential.  Students returning from fall session and new students welcome.  Instructor:  Tracy Mitton

Intro to Voice Lessons, various times, ages 10 & up! $17.50 a lesson, $87.50
Learn the Basics of Vocal Technique, including correct vowel formation, breathing, posture, vocal range, and how to pick a song.  Come prepared with a song to sing and a recording device.  Email request for this class to schedule time.  Instructor: Gina Holben

Mosaic Art, 9:50-10:45 or 1:25-2:20, ages 10 & up, $38 plus $10 supply fee
Mosaic is the art of creating a design by arranging small pieces of a chosen material to create the “bigger picture”.  Learn the basics and create beautiful work of art using different materials from abstract to tiles!  From beginner through more advanced artists.  Note:  2 different class times are offered, and can be taken.  Instructor:  Jennifer Combs

Fine Arts Painting with Leah, 10:50-11:45, or 12:20-1:15, ages 10 & up, $38 plus $15 fee
Venture into the world of painting!  Learn, or continue to learn, technique and experiment with the many mediums of paint.  Explore your creativity with acrylics, watercolor, oil and stains in this fine arts class.  Note:  this class is offered in two separate hours.  Instructor:  Leah Peach

Pots & Plants, Horticulture, 1:30-2:25, ages 10 & up, $38 plus $15 supply fee
In this class we will combine science and artistic creativity to mold and paint our own planters, and discover first-hand the science of growing plants. Learn about flowers, herbs, art, and pottery.  Instructor:  Leah Peach

Fun with Hydraulics, 9:50-10:45, ages 9 & up, $29 plus $10 supply fee
In this class we will learn about the very basics of hydraulics.  We’ll build toys out of popsicle sticks, and incorporate a simple water-based hydraulic system to add simple movement.  Instructor:  Jared Piro

Cross Fit, 1:30-2:25, ages 9-13, $29
Grow up healthy and strong with a lifelong love of working out, thus avoiding the common problems associated with childhood inactivity and obesity!  Children will push, pull, run, throw, climb, lift, jump, effectively and safely, regardless of whether or not they play athletics.  During this program, the coach will educate your child on the importance of making their bodies powerful, enriching their minds, building strong character, creating rewarding experiences, and developing a sense of pride.  We require that kids wear tennis shoes for this program.  Parents welcome!  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Jeremey Ouellette

Breaking into Film and Television!  12:20-2:20, ages 8 & up, $86
DOUBLE TIME SLOT class, please be aware!  For Youth and Teens!  PARENTAL ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!  WCT’s Artistic Director and professional actor Greg Trzaskoma (Gran Torino with Clint Eastwood, Stone with Robert DeNiro and Edward Norton, This Must be the Place with Sean Penn, etc.) guides you through your first steps on your way to roles in commercials, television and film.  Classes include headshots, resumes’, agents, casting directors, audition technique and more.  If you really don’t care if you are in the industry or not, this is NOT the class for you.  Bring your headshot and resume’ if you’ve got ‘em.  Instructor:  Greg Trzaskoma

Sing Out!  9:50, ages 8 and up, $29 plus $10
If you enjoy singing and dancing like American Idol, High School Musical, and The Sing-Off, then this class is for you.  We will learn to sing and dance while having a great time.  Even if you’ve never been in a show choir before, think you sing like a frog, this class is for you!  This summer, Sing Out will be getting ready to compete and may have other opportunities to sing in the community.  Come dressed for movement.  Parents are welcome in the last week of class for an open house style demonstration. Guitar, Group Lessons, 12:20, ages 8 & up, $38, BYO Guitar
A group guitar class including tuning, notation, chords, strumming patterns, and more!  Beginners and beyond are welcome.   Acoustic/electric reviewed.  Bring your own guitar, or recommendations for rental are available.  New and returning students always welcome.  Instructor:  Neal Wright

Ukulele lessons!  10:50-11:45, ages 8 & up, $38, BYO Ukulele
Want to strum to a tune?  A ukulele is a simple instrument to start with, and what beautiful music it makes!  This group ukulele class includes tuning, notation, chords, strumming patterns, and more!  Beginners and beyond are welcome.   Bring your own ukelele.  New and returning students always welcome.  Instructor:  Neal Wright

Pinteresting Art & Craft, 9:50-10:45, ages 8 & up, $29 plus $10 supply fee
Are you on Pinterest?  Is your mom?  Wanted to try some of those awesome craft ideas for yourself?  Let’s do it!  Paint a hand-painted paddle brush, create a one-of-a-kind washer necklace, make a head band out of a t-shirt, and more!  Instructor:  Tessa Hawkes

Drum/Ear Training, 10:50-11:45, ages 8 & up, $45
Drumming is a fantastic outlet and an amazing form of expression, along with being the basis for almost all music types.  Learn about the drum kit, play and share with group lessons and grow your potential in this rhythmic class.  Instructor:  artidst and homescool graduate, Paul Brymer

Creative Writing Prompts, 1:30-2:25, ages 8-11, $29
Students will be working together to write and tell stories and get them down on paper to share with others.  The class focus will be on story-telling and the creation of stories.  The instructor will employ dictation and recording during class to show students how their ideas can become stories without struggles.  This class is ideal for those who have great imaginations and/or those who have not enjoyed writing in the past.  Each student will be allowed to progress at their own level.  Instructor:  Jo Anne Kroll

Secret Codes!  10:50-11:45, ages 7-11, $29
Learn to decode Braille, Morse Code, symbolic and alpha-numeric codes using Bible verses.  Pass secret messages to others in the class with a new code each week!  On the last week, use all you have learned to unravel the mysteries behind a treasure map with a waiting surprise!  Instructor:  Jo Anne Kroll

Lyrical/Jazz with Samantha, 1:30-2:25, ages 6 & up, $29
This class offers the best of both worlds!  Jazz offers an upbeat style dance with its own set of steps and technique.  Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet and jazz, using more fluid story-telling movements while incorporating jazz technique and style.  Please wear leotard under dance pants or ballet skirt, with jazz shoes or barefoot.  Instructor:  Samantha Woychowski

Hip Hop!  Intermediate and Up, 10:50, ages 8 & up, $38
Experience requested.  Let’s move!  An awesome class for all, with clean lyrics!  In hip-hop we will be focusing on the rhythm and the beat of the music, coordinating our movements to go with that beat, and incorporating other styles of dance.  Please wear comfortable fitting shorts/pants and t-shirts with clean tennis shoes or jazz shoes.  Instructor:  Jennifer Combs

Hip Hop/Broadway Mix, Street Moves, 12:20, ages 7 & up, $38
An awesome class for all, with clean lyrics!  We will incorporate the hip hop/street style moves with Broadway style and perform songs from some of the latest Broadway hits like “The Heights” or “Newsies”.  Please wear comfortable fitting shorts/pants and t-shirts with clean tennis shoes or jazz shoes.  New & returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Jennifer Combs

Norse Mythology, 10:50-11:45, ages 8 & up, $29 plus $2 supply fee
Thor is not just a Marvel Comic Character!  Come to this class and discover the world of the Norse gods and goddesses.  Instructor:  Lisa Rathbun

Praise Dance! 9:50-10:45, ages 8 & up, $29
Learn many techniques of Christian dance and movement, read short Bible verses, have a moment of prayer, and use special dance props!  We will use our bodies to express our joy and thankfulness to the Lord.  Instructor:  Samantha Woychowski

Little House Songs and Crafts, 1:30-2:25, ages 7-13, $29 plus $5 supply fee
Step back in time through the Little House series of songs and activities.  Sing along as we enjoy the same songs Pa sang with Laura and Mary followed by a craft inspired by activities the Ingalls family did.  Instructor:  Lisa Rathbun

Tap Dance! 12:20-1:15, ages 6 & up, $29
Let’s dance!  Tap dancing encourages rhythm, synchronization, precision, and teamwork.  Dress ready to dance, NO long bell bottomed pants or dresses/skirts that fall under the knee, please.  Long hair should be pulled back securely.  New and returning students welcome.  Tap shoes are required, but the instructor may have a pair you can borrow for the term.  Instructor:  Deanna Irwin

American Girl History with Addy, 12:20-1:15, ages 6 & up, $29 plus $6 supply fee
Each week we will read and encompass a portion of "Meet Addy" the American girl.  We will make crafts as a class and learn about the time period, listen to music from the era and study cultural differences and family traditions.  The final class will include a traditions party, allowing each girl to share her own cultural and family traditions with the class.  Instructor:  Jo Anne Kroll

An isolated, icy setting; a cold snow queen; a brave heroine; a friendly reindeer – these are some of the similarities of Hans Christian Andersen’s original fairy tale with Disney’s “Frozen”.  But this story is quite different!  Come explore the world of ice and snow!  Instructor:  Lisa Rathbun

Private or Semi-Private Piano Lesson, ages 6 to 100, $17.50/lesson, Times TBD
Learn how to read notes, play songs by ear, music theory, piano technique, and even create your own song!  Gina Holben has a Master’s Degree in Music Education and 15 years of experience teaching piano. You may need to bring a Portable Piano Keyboard to class. New and returning students welcome, or share this class with a friend!  30 minute lessons.  Instructor: Gina Holben

Scrapbooking Fun 12:20-1:15, ages 6-12, $29 plus $20 supply fee
Create a fun mini-album full of your photos, colorful paper, and fun embellishments.  Learn techniques such as cutting, adhering, stamping, embossing, and journaling.  Use fun products such as ink and stamps, stickers, chipboard, and much more.  Students provide 20-25 photos from one event, holiday, vacation or theme.  This class is ideal for any child who loves playing with paper and doing crafts.  The students will finish a 10 page 8x9 photo album by the end of the session.  Instructor:  Scrapbook Publisher, Carrie Macgillis

Science Fun, Indoors & Out!  12:20-1:00, ages 5-9, $29 plus $8 supply fee
In this 5 week class, we will harness the power of the sun, look at surprising chemical reactions, and learn the science needed to make ice cream!  Note:  class ends at 1:00pm.  Instructor:  Tracy Mitton  

Spanish Fun Continues, 9:50, ages 5-9, $29
Continued from fall 2013, students are welcome to grow their knowledge in a fun, easy, and interesting way with visuals, games, books, etc.  Whether your child knows a little Spanish or a lot, they will enjoy this class.  Formerly from Guatemala, been here since 1996, a U.S. citizen, and giving back in the community by teaching others her mother tongue.  Her motto, “Learn a little, use it a lot,” will help students grow in their Spanish language.   Instructor, Carolina Hood

Does your child adore Fancy Nancy?  So does Mrs. Rosie!  Join an elementary experienced teacher with French fluency in a tour of Fancy Nancy books, activities, French language immersion and reading readiness and practice!  Instructor:  Roseanna Ondra

Mommy and Me Piano lessons, 12:20-1:15, ages 3-7, $29 plus $5 supply fee
Do you want to learn the basics of piano to teach your child?  Learn the piano ABC’s, basics of finger technique, and songs you can play at home with your children. We will sing, dance, and play piano! Gina has a Master’s Degree in Music Education and 15 years of experience teaching piano. You may need to bring a Portable Piano Keyboard to class. My First Science Classes, 10:50-11:45, ages 3-6, $29 plus $5 supply fee
Your child(ren) will have fun through discovery, in a science class designed just for them.  Students will discover more about their everyday world, using age-appropriate and safe items.  New and returning students welcome, as science lessons are different each term.  Instructor:  Roseanna Ondra

Adventures in Arts & Crafts!  9:50-10:45, ages 3-6, $29 plus $5 supply fee
From the amazing Adventures in Literature instructor comes a new arts & crafts class!  We will work on a fun new craft every week using many different mediums.  Come ready to get a bit crafty!  Rolling up your sleeves and bringing one of your dad’s old t-shirts to wear is a great cover up idea.  Instructor:  Amanda Gehrke

Tots Ballet with Samantha, 10:50-11:45, ages 3-6, $29
Tots Ballet is an adorable class for young children who may or may not have experience in dance.  Ballet technique is the foundation for every style of dance; jazz, modern, ballroom, and even hip-hop!  Girls: Pink or black Leotard, Pink or white Tights, Ballet Shoes.  Boys: White T-Shirt, black light cotton pants (no sweats), ballet shoes.  All long hair pulled back securely in a ponytail or bun, please no hair in face.  Instructor:  Samantha Woychowski

More Adventures in Literature, 10:50, ages 3–6, $29
Each week we'll enjoy the adventures of a classic children's book, and then enjoy activities that go along with our story.  We'll play games, create art projects and explore social studies, math and science concepts from the story.  Always a new subject, every term!  Instructor:  Amanda Gehrke

Broadway Babies, 9:50, ages 3-5, $29
Combine music, dance and drama into one class.  We will sing songs, play with instruments and learn the basics of dance for theater.  In class we will act out Bible stories and songs to learn some of the basics of drama.  This class is for the youngest performer and will be adapted to meet the needs of the students in the class.  The primary goal is feeling comfortable on stage and having a great time.  Parents are welcome to attend with their children to make this class a great experience.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Jo Anne Kroll
