Class Descriptions!!!!!

Enrichment Hub Spring 2009 Classes, by age/class (guideline ages):

Classes run Fridays, 6 weeks, unless noted, 5/8/09 – 6/12/09, and Kensington Church in Troy, MI.

Immigration to our Nation, History, 9th grade through adult

A brief synopsis on the subject of immigration: history of (from Pilgrims to present); employment; family; asylum/refugee; deportation/removal; and citizenship/naturalization. Learn in which manners people come to the US legally and illegally. Analyze, evaluate, and discuss how this affects our every day lives. Assignments will include researching current events and researching own path in which your family immigrated to the USA. Instructor: Tracey Cooley Kevelighan, attorney.

American Sign Language, ages 9 through adult

Take this awesome class with your family, or without. Based on American Sign Language, learn or continue learning a new language to reach your community. What a wonderful addition to your homeschooling journey. Instructor: Deb Weathers-Jablonski

Introduction to Digital Photography, ages 9 through adult

This course is designed to teach the basics of both photography and digital photography. We will cover how a camera works as well as all the equipment necessary to be success in photography. Students will go on a field trip and practice shooting, giving each a chance to apply concepts learned in class. After the trip, each student will send in a favorite picture for review in our final class. I will discuss areas that were performed well, as well as areas for improvement. To get the most out of this class, it is recommended that you have a camera. Although this course is an intro to digital photography, students with film cameras will be able to gain valuable knowledge as well. Video Tech, Advanced, ages 12 & up, 5 weeks

Students will control their own videos in teams, and in that team will create videos, story boards, and scripts. Their acting skills will grow as they learn scripts for their videos. Students will continue to learn proper sound, lighting and video skills required to use Kensington Church’s equipment. At the end of term, they will have a “film festival” of their films. If available after class, they will also get a chance to edit their own videos. Requirements: previous advanced video tech or approved by instructor. Reminder, no Video Tech class will run on 5/8. Art with Carmen, ages 9 through adult

Experience the beauty of creating, drawing, mixing colors and have all of this artistic you in a canvas!! Technique: oil on canvas, various mediums. Celebrates spring in an “impressionism way.” Learn about Van Gogh, Degas, and Renoir, Picasso, then design and paint a Spring Landscape. Draw and paint your own design through Cubism, a master abstract piece with a splash of colors. Note class is hour and 15 minutes. Instructor: Carmen Fernandez, Arquitect and amazing art teacher for 20 years

Video Game Animation, ages 9 & up

Dive into the world of video game animation by creating characters that dance, sing and interact with one another. Add sound effects and music clips to create a dynamic video animation game using Scratch, the innovative programming language created just for kids by the MIT Media Lab. You can post your game online so that your friends, your parents, even your grandmother can play your video game! Creativity rules in this fun version of video game design! Hip Hop, ages 9 & up

No experience required. Let’s move! An awesome class for all, with clean lyrics! In hip-hop we will be focusing on the rhythm and the beat of the music and coordinating our movements to go with that beat, incorporating other styles of dance. Please wear loose fitting pants and t-shirts with clean tennis shoes. Instructor: Vicki Kubinski.

Lyrical Dance, ages 8 & up

No experience required. Let’s move! A lyrical dance mix, with clean lyrics! Girls, wear leotards & loose fitting dance wear, ballet shoes. Boys, wear cotton pants and t-shirts with ballet shoes. Instructor: Jennifer Defer

Drama!, ages 8 - 16

A fun Drama class of verbal and non-verbal communication form. Students will come up with their own ideas of who, what, where, creative situations, character development, pantomime, facial expressions and gestures, creating a script through this fashion. Skills mastered will be used in production at the end of course. Instructor: Katie Beth Hostetter, Director of Urban Arts, Detroit

US Made Leaders, ages 9 – 12

Learn leadership building and “soft-skill” development. Instructor provides them with the opportunity to mature with these skills into and through adolescence, rather than learning them for the first time as adults, offering a priceless early advantage in a highly competitive and ever-changing future. Art with Gabriela, ages 8 through adult

Observe, contrast, and learn proportion, while painting various themes with vivid acrylics. Bring your acrylics, or we have some to share. Instructor: Kensington’s own Romanian Artist, Gabriela Orza.

Knitting and Felting, ages 8 through adult, plus $10 materials

“The popularity of knitting and other fiber arts is good for everyone, especially kids. Their developing minds crave the hand-eye coordination and engagement of the whole person that working with wool provides." (Nova Naturals, 2009) This class will introduce you to the wonders of wool. Learn the basics of felting and knitting and beyond. $10 materials fee. Instructor: Michelle McCoy.

The Microscopic World, ages 8 & up, $68

Students will learn about and use The Scientific Method as they study specimens, run experiments and learn about the microscopic world. By using a unique digital microscope, students will also explore the computer side of science with digital photography and editing techniques. Students will work in small groups . Instructor: Jo Watts, computer Explorers

Video Tech, Intermediate, ages 9 - 12, 5 weeks

This class will go into video camera sound and coloring, and strategic shooting in videos. We will work weekly on acting warm-ups to aid in creating, producing, and filming their own videos. Requirement: 2 semesters of Beginner Video Tech, or approval advancement from instructor. Reminder, no Video Tech class will run on 5/8. Instructor: Ariane Paviani

Guitar, Private Instruction, ages 8 & Up, $21/lesson

Enjoy acoustic or electric guitar private lessons with timing that varies upon your needs. Bring your own guitar, or recommendations for rental are available. If 2 or more students coordinate time, discounts are offered. Amazing deal! Other times available, just ask. Instructor(s): Neal Wright, Matt Darcie

Guitar, group, acoustic or electric, ages 8 & up

A group guitar class including tuning, notation, chords, strumming patterns & more! Beginners and a bit beyond are welcome. Acoustic/electric reviewed. Bring your own guitar, or recommendations for rental are available. Instructor(s): Neal Wright, Matt Darcie

Violin, group lessons, ages 8 & up

Fine arts instructor Katie Beth offers lessons in a small group setting. Essential elements book required, $7.95, including CD. Suzuki method, performance technique, and traditional methods are all taught in the lesson. Instructor: Katie Beth Hostetter, Director of Urban Arts, Detroit.

Violin, private lessons, ages 4 and up, ½ hour, $21/lesson or less, if group.

Minis Ballet, Tap, and Jazz with Megan, ages 6-9

Children will love learning Ballet, Tap and Jazz with instructor, Megan Montgomery. Previous dance experience recommended. Girls: Leotard, Tights or leggings, tap and jazz Shoes. Boys: White T-Shirt, Black light cotton pants (no sweats), tap and jazz shoes. Instructor: Megan Montgomery

Praise and Worship! (PAW) ages 6-12

We are called to worship God with every action, every day of our life. A life of praise and worship fills our deepest needs, and amazingly, it also brings great joy to God. In this class, children will explore a variety of different ways to worship including singing, playing instruments, creative prayer, dance, scripture, and other creative expression. Special needs are welcome. Instructor: Deb Weathers-Jablonski

Art Explorers, ages 5 – 9, (Special needs or younger students can join with parent participation.)

Want to explore different art mediums? We’ll start with learning how to make colors, and move into exploring the wonderful world of art with paints, clay, and more in this fun exploratory session! We will have smocks for the children, but they may be getting messy! So if you’ve got long hair, pull it back; and wear your old play clothes. This is a PROCESS oriented class, the end result may or may not be beautiful – and that’s okay! Instructors: Sydney Forsythe & Valerie Braekvelt

Science Lab Fun, ages 5 – 9

Learn Science through age appropriate, hands-on experiments focused on God's design. Children will take home info to enjoy repeating their new knowledge with their family. Instructor: Tricia Ouellette

Story Hour with a Twist, ages 5 - 8

Not your usual library story hour! Come ready to hear classic, shouldn’t be missed books. Each story will be followed by a related project: simple crafts, acting out the story or movement activities. The perfect story hour for wiggly kids! Book list will be available for families registered. Instructor: Michelle McCoy.

Under the Sea, ages 6 - 8, $68

Students will utilize KidPix Studio Deluxe 3 to create a multimedia presentation about life under the sea. Students will learn to use various toolbars, graphics and even record their voice as they complete their presentation. Completed project will depend on the current computer literacy of the students. Students will use our equipment and software to complete all projects and receive a CD of their completed work at the end of the class. All research must be completed at home. Early Science Experiments, ages 3-6

Learn Science through age appropriate, hands-on experiments focused on God's design. Children will take home info to enjoy repeating their new knowledge with their family. Instructor: Tricia Ouellette

Tots Ballet & Tap with Megan, ages 3-5

An adorable class for young children who may or may not have experience in dance. Girls: Pink or black Leotard, Pink or white Tights, Ballet and Tap Shoes. Boys: White T-Shirt, Black light cotton pants (no sweats), ballet shoes. Instructor: Megan Montgomery

Spring Arts & Crafts, ages 3-6, 5 weeks

Think spring in this fun filled art class for boys and girls! We will be making some creative crafts that will have us thinking about the outdoors and springtime fun! Parents are welcome to stay and join their child in creating. Note: Instructor will not have class on 6/12. Instructor: Jenny Barclay

Young Dance with Megan, ages 3-6, 12:20 PM

An adorable class for young children who may or may not have experience in dance. Girls: leotard, cotton pants, tights, ballet and shoes. Boys: white T-shirt, black light cotton pants (no sweats), ballet shoes. Instructor: Megan Montgomery

Music & Movement, with parent, ages 18 months – 3, 10:50 AM

Parents and tots play and learn to connect while interacting with others. Come ready to stretch & move together to music, while playing with parachutes, musical instruments, and scarves! Instructor: Jennifer Defer

Parent/Tot Room, available to all, free, all hours! Join each other in community!
