Enrichment Hub Winter 2015 Class Descriptions

Times are listed in class description.  Production and Pot Luck 3/20/15, after scheduled classes.  This is such a great way to show what they’ve learned to Daddy, Grandma, etc., on stage.

* Classes are held Fridays, 8 weeks, unless noted in description. 
* In case of inclement weather, please see Troy Schools for closings.  If they are closed for weather, so are we, as our building is on their schedule of weather closings.  We are not on their schedule for days off or vacations. 
* Classes are non-refundable and non-transferrable once registered, unless extreme circumstances.  Thank you for honoring the program and instructors in this manner.
* Registration is required in advance to ensure your child’s placement, to ensure classes run, and to prepare the instructor for their class.  Enrollment is on a first come, first serve basis.  See registration form for details.
* Note we offer a Fall, Winter and Spring term at Enrichment Hub.  Some classes need continuance for a credit, most do not.  Registrations are separate for each term.  $10 registration fee per family per term, not per person.  No other fees besides the ones mentioned here.

High School Biology, Part 2 10:50-11:45, age 14 & up, $52 plus $15 supply fee
This class is the second of 2 parts, which will give a high school student a full science credit in Biology.  This term we will be covering plants, invertebrates, vertebrates, the skeleton, muscles, skin, the nervous system, the endocrine system, the circulatory system, the respiratory system, digestion and excretion, immunity and reproduction.  Each week students will be required to do reading, definitions, and review questions at home.  In class, we will discuss the answers to their homework and do a lab related to the topic we are studying.  Lab will include some actual and some virtual dissection.  There are also 2 optional exams per term (these are for marking by the parent, Tracy provides the answer key). Due to the fact that this is a high school credit class, this class will involve a scientific discussion of the organs that are part of the reproductive system.  We will be discussing these organs in a very scientific manner.   However, if you wish you may choose for your student to skip this section. A Capella Teen Choir, 12:20, age 12 & up, $52 plus $5 supply fee
Do you love to sing?  Do you love A Capella groups?  Are people always saying you have a good voice or you can beatbox well? Then this class is for you!  We will be learning to sing in 3-4 part harmony, as well as beatbox, learn to improve our singing voice, and create our own arrangements of songs we love.  Choral experience strongly encouraged.  Instructor: Gina Holben

IMPROV and THEATRE Teens, 12:20, age 12 & up, $59
Come explore Improvisation and Theatre with games and exercises for creating comedic and dramatic characters and scripts.  These free the actor's imagination, build ensemble, and hone concentration and focus skills.  New and returning students always welcome.  Instructor:  Dani Cochrane

Robotics, Programming, 10:50, age 12 & up, $52 plus $10 supply fee, BYO Laptop
In this continuing class we'll turn stuffed animals into robots, and program them to control outputs such as LEDs, motors, and servos with inputs such as dials and switches.  New and returning students welcome, we will continue learning new things each term.  Bring your own Laptop for class participation.  Instructor:  Jared Piro

Building Web Pages, 9:50, age 12 & up, $52, BYO Laptop
In this classes we'll learn all about what it takes to make web pages by build some on our own computers. We will Learn about HTML and adding content to our pages, how to do it properly using valid HTML markup, and the different types of HTML. Learn about styling and how we can change the way your content looks by using CSS and all of its various rules.  Finally we'll learn how we can debug our pages when things are not working the way we would expect them to. Bring your own Laptop for class participation.  Instructor:  Jared Piro

Wars of America II, 1:30-2:25, age 12 & up, 6 weeks, $40
Back by demand, our resident historian returns to finish the 2nd half of the Wars of America class.  This class deals with the Spanish-American War, the World Wars, the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts, both Iraq Wars, and if time allows, the War against Terror.  Take a relevant look.  How did we get involved? What was at stake? What context in history, legacy and perhaps most important, moral lessons are to be learned? New and returning students welcome.  Note:  No class 2/6 or 2/13.  Instructor:  Doug Kuhn

Devised Theatre for Teens, 10:50, age 12 & up, $58
Theatre is amazing!  Teens will work on creating movement based on text, through the use of improvisation and storytelling.  No movement training required, all levels of theatre teens welcome, beginners to advanced.  Instructor:  Dani Cochrane

Art Appreciation, Modern Art, 12:20-1:15, age 10 & up, $52
Modern art is typically the style of art in which artistic traditions from the past have been thrown aside in a spirit of experimentation (around 1860s - 1970s).   Students will each pick different modern artists and study them, they will then do an informal report to the class.  We will work our way through several of the "greats" of the Modern Art age and pick a couple to reproduce during class.  Instructor:  Angelique VanHooser

Voice Lessons, various times, age 10 & up, $17.50 a lesson, ($140)
Learn or continue to learn the basics of Vocal Technique, including correct vowel formation, breathing, posture, vocal range, and how to pick a song.  Come prepared with a song to sing and a recording device.  Email request for this class to schedule time.  Instructor: Gina Holben

Intermediate/Advanced Sewing and Design, 10:50, age 10 & up, $52 plus $(below)
Basic sewing skills and work with some patterns in past required. Improve techniques for more professional looking projects, and based on student level, move on to more challenging garments, and making patterns for your own design.  Please bring something you have made before to the first class.  Materials $ is Students will be required to bring in their own patterns and materials from list to be provided at/after first class.  Instructor:  Nancy Oeswein

Art with Carmen, Architectural Wonders, 1:30-2:40, age 10 & up, 8 weeks, $79 + $18
Architectural/technical drawing combined class.  The student will learn how to draw in perspective, using rulers and compass as they get their inspiration from the Empire State Building, an Xavier del Bac Mission, the White House, Gate Way arch, Trinity Church, The Jefferson Monticello, the Golden Gate, Disney concert Hall and more.  Bring a picture of your favorite building and draw it in Pencil first week, please.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Artist and Architect, Carmen Fernandez

Middle School Life Science, The Human Body & Nutrition, 9:50, age 10-14, $52 plus $15
This class covers half a year of middle school biology.  This term will focus on the human body (not including reproduction!) and human health and nutrition. Topics covered include: The parts and systems of the human body, nutrition, and healthy habits.  Each week students will be required to complete a short reading assignment and as well as a brief activity at home.  In class, we will go over the answers to the questions and do a lab related to that week’s topic.  Instructor:  Tracy Mitton

Auditioning, Stage and Film, 1:30-2:25, age 10 & up, $59
Focus on the art of auditioning in this class. Students will work on cold and warm reads, introductions, and monologues for stage and film work. Each student will leave the class with a prepared 1 minute monologue to use in future auditions.  Instructor:  Dani Cochrane

Cross Fit, 1:30-2:25, age 9-13, 7 weeks, $45
Grow up healthy and strong with a lifelong love of working out!  Children will push, pull, run, throw, climb, lift, jump, effectively and safely, regardless of whether or not they play athletics.  We require that kids wear tennis shoes for this program.  New and returning students welcome.  Note:  no class 3/20, production day.  Instructor:  Jeremey Ouellette

Sing Out!  9:50, age 8 and up, $52 plus $10
If you enjoy singing and dancing, this class is for you.  We will learn to sing with and without a microphone, and dance while having a great time.  Even if you’ve never been in a show choir before, even if you think you sing like a frog, this class is for you!  Come dressed for movement.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor: Gina Holben

Sewing for the Beginner, 1:30-2:25, age 8 & up, $52 plus $5 and 1 fabric
This class will pay for itself many times over.  In this fun class, we will start with the basics of proper mending, buttons, but quickly move to reading and understanding patterns, fabric selection and non-traditional sources for a true economy of sewing. We will end this series with a fun fashion show of our creations.  Bring one mending project from home the first week.  Students will need to buy or bring in their own fabric for one project. Healthy Cooking and Culinary Nutrition, 10:50, age 8 & up, $70
Veggiecation® is a youth-based culinary nutrition education program that teaches the health benefits of vegetables and how to prepare them in simple, affordable, unique, and most importantly, delicious ways!  Veggiecation® lessons focus on the seasonality of fruits, vegetables, beans and herbs as well as their common geographic region and the health benefits most relevant to minds and bodies.  Join Chef Cindy for a hands-on cooking class to prepare a recipe (most recipes are allergy free!) and then taste our creation.  Chefs leave with a copy of each recipe in addition to some other surprise goodies.  Instructor:  Cindy Olekszyk of Veggiecation®

Guitar, Group Lessons, 12:20, age 8 & up, $59, BYO Guitar
A group guitar class including tuning, notation, chords, strumming patterns, and more!  Beginners and beyond are welcome.   Acoustic/electric reviewed.  Bring your own guitar, or recommendations for rental are available.  New and returning students always welcome.  Instructor:  Neal Wright

Ukulele lessons!  10:50, age 8 & up, $59, BYO Ukulele
Want to strum to a tune?  A ukulele is a simple instrument to start with, and what beautiful music it makes!  This group ukulele class includes tuning, notation, chords, strumming patterns, and more!  Beginners and beyond are welcome.   Bring your own ukelele.  New and returning students always welcome.  Instructor:  Neal Wright

Chess, Beginner, 1:30-2:25, ages 7-15, $52 plus $10 book
The class will involve playing chess with the instructor, giving advice, group instruction of chess tactics, and introduction of tournament rules. Students will learn the proper use of a chess clock and how to record a chess game. Students will receive a workbook in which homework of 15 minutes per week will be given. Chess sets and clocks are provided. Appropriate for students who know how to play chess, but have never taken a class and for students who have never played before.  Instructor: Alexander Deatrick, US Chess Expert and Candidate Master

Mosaic Art, 1:30-2:25, ages 7 & up, $59 plus $15 supply fee
New and returning students welcome.  Mosaic is the art of creating a design by arranging small pieces of a chosen material to create the “bigger picture”.  Learn the basics and create beautiful work of art using different materials from abstract to tiles!  From beginner through more advanced artists.  Instructor:  Jennifer Combs

Chess, Intermediate, 12:20-1:15, ages 7-15, $52
If students have taken a chess class with Alexander before, they should take this class. We will review in order to assess how well students remember previous material, and then we will delve into more complicated ideas such as opening theory, longer forced checkmates, and combinations. Chess sets and clocks are provided. Workbook is $10; if students still have theirs from a previous session they do not need to purchase another.  Instructor: Alexander Deatrick, US Chess Expert and Candidate Master

Multimedia Art, 9:50, ages 7 & up, $58 plus $10 supply fee
Learn an appreciation of Art and Art History thru a series of multi-media projects.  Each project will focus on an important Artist, so students will learn about art history and a wide variety of materials and techniques while we create unique works of art.  We will learn about perspective from Picasso, Realism from Rembrandt, Chiaroscuro from Caravaggio, Drawing from DaVinci, Art activism from Haring, Texture and emotion from Pollack, and more.  Instructor:  Nancy Oeswein

Lyrical Ballet with Samantha, 12:20, ages 7 & up, $52
Lyrical ballet offers a beautiful style dance with its own set of steps and technique.  Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet forms, using more fluid story-telling movements while incorporating technique and style.  Please wear leotard under dance pants or ballet skirt, with jazz shoes or barefoot.  Instructor:  Samantha Woychowski

Highland Dance, 12:20, ages 6 & up, $59
Come and learn and almost 2,000 year old style of dance including a dance with swords!  High energy, lots of jumping, warm up set to fun music, great for boys and girls.  No shoes, or wear ballet or jazz shoes.  Leggings and leotards are optional but helpful.  Instructor:  Jennifer Combs

Musical Theater Dance, 10:50, ages 7 & up, $59
Love to dance? Sing? Act? In this class you will learn songs and dances from popular Broadway musicals. We will also put together a short audition piece for all you aspiring actors! Upbeat and fun, this class is great for both boys and girls.  Wear clothes you can dance in.  Instructor:  Jennifer Combs

Jazz Dance, 9:50, age 7 & up, $59
Jazz dance is fun and upbeat. In this class we will learn the basic jazz movements as well as work on strength and flexibility all set to fun music! No shoes, or wear ballet or jazz shoes.  Leggings and leotards are optional but helpful.  Instructor:  Jennifer Combs


Geography!  10:50-11:45, age 7-12, $52
Take a brief trip around the globe as a class before choosing our own countries to study and report on.  Students will have fun homework assignments to prepare for an in class presentation on their selected country.  We will also study the geography of our own state and country as time allows each week.  Instructor:  Jo Anne Kroll

Science for Kids, Physics!  12:20-1:15, ages 6-9, $52 plus $10
Learn about Air (pressure, Bernouilli’s Law, friction, etc.), Water (surface tension, density, etc.), magnetism, force, inertia, Newton’s three laws, electricity, and circuits. Each student will receive a portfolio and pages to collect their special physics cards, as well as each week’s experiment instructions. There will be several experiments for each week’s topic as well and some weeks there will be an activity or project for the students to take home.  Instructor:  Tracy Mitton

Tap Dancing, 10:50, age 6 & up, $52
Let’s dance!  Tap dancing encourages rhythm, synchronization, precision, and teamwork.  Dress ready to dance, NO long bell bottomed pants or dresses/skirts that fall under the knee, please.  Long hair should be pulled back securely.  New and returning students welcome.  Tap shoes are required, but the instructor may have a pair you can borrow for the term.  Instructor:  Deanna Irwin

Interpretative dance, 1:30-2:25, ages 6 & up, $52
Like dancing in Broadway musical style? As musicals have a wide range of themes, so does interpretive dance! Students will learn dance routines and also be taught how to choreograph their own dances! Street clothes and any type of shoes will do.  Instructor:  Deanna Irwin

American Girl History with Caroline, 9:50-10:45, age 6 & up, $52 plus $6 supply fee
Each week we will read a portion of "Meet Caroline" the American girl.  We will make crafts, play games, and read adventures as a class, while learning about the early 19th century. Instructor:  Jo Anne Kroll

Private or Semi-Private Piano Lesson, ages 6 to 100, $17.50/lesson, Times TBD
Learn how to read notes, play songs by ear, music theory, piano technique, and even create your own song!  Gina Holben has a Master’s Degree in Music Education and 15 years of experience teaching piano. You may need to bring a Portable Piano Keyboard to class. New and returning students welcome, or share this class with a friend!  30 minute lessons.  Instructor: Gina Holben



Cooking 4 Kids, 1:30-2:25, ages 6 & up, 7 weeks, $45, plus $7 supply fee
This class will focus on simple meals and snacks your child can create with little or no parental help.  Safety, hygiene and responsibility go hand in hand with the food groups in this class.  We will make a different recipe each week.  Note:  No class on 3/20.  Instructor:  JoAnne Kroll

Young Fine Arts, 12:20, ages 5-9, $52 plus $5 supply fee
This beginning art class will foster a love of fine Arts among the youngest artists.  We will experiment freely with a variety of materials and gain an understanding of what Art is and how it makes the world beautiful.  We'll learn about color wheels, paper cutting, expressing our emotions, shading, texture and seeing the world with an artist's eyes.  Instructor:  Nancy Oeswein

Aesop's Fables Notebook, 9:50, ages 4-8, $52
 We will read a couple of Aesop's Fables each week and add them to our very own lapbook/notebook.  These tales with morals are a fun and easy was to encourage the love of literature in short stories along with the fun of gluing, cutting and coloring.   Instructor:  Angelique VanHooser

Young Piano, plus Parent Instruction, 10:50-11:45 ages 3-6, $52 plus $5 supply fee
Do you want to learn the basics of piano to teach your child?  Learn the piano ABC’s, basics of finger technique, and songs you can play at home with your children. We will sing, dance, and play piano! Gina has a Master’s Degree in Music Education and 15 years of experience teaching piano.  Adult participation is required. Instructor: Gina Holben

Adventures in Arts & Crafts!  9:50-10:45, ages 3-6, $52 plus $5 supply fee
From the amazing Adventures in Literature instructor comes a new arts & crafts class!  We will work on a fun new craft every week using many different mediums.  Come ready to get a bit crafty!  Rolling up your sleeves and bringing one of your dad’s old t-shirts to wear is a great cover up idea.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Amanda Gehrke

Tots Ballet, 9:50, ages 3-6, $52
Tots Ballet is an adorable class for young children who may or may not have experience in dance.  Ballet technique is the foundation for every style of dance; jazz, modern, ballroom, and even hip-hop!  Girls: Pink or black Leotard, Pink or white Tights, Ballet Shoes.  Boys: White T-Shirt, black light cotton pants (no sweats), ballet shoes.  All long hair pulled back securely in a ponytail or bun, please no hair in face.  Instructor:  Samantha Woychowski



Tots Tumbling with Samantha, 1:25-2:20, ages 3-6, $52
Come move and practice some basic gymnastics skills such as forward rolls and headstands! A soft balance beam will help with our balance and add an element of fun! If your child is looking to dance at a faster pace, this class is for you!  Instructor:  Samantha Woychowski

Tots Ballet/Tumbling Combo, 10:50, ages 3-6, $52
Ballet/tumbling class is great for those little ones who want to learn basic ballet but also wants to have a little fun with tumbling! Tiny Tots Tap 12:20, ages 3-7, $52

Adventures in Literature, 10:50, ages 3–6, $52
Each week we'll enjoy the adventures of a classic children's book, and then enjoy activities that go along with our story.  We'll play games, create art projects and explore social studies, math and science concepts from the story.  Always a new subject, every term!  Instructor:  Amanda Gehrke

Broadway Babies, 12:20, ages 3-5, $52
Combine music, dance and drama into one class.  We will sing songs, play with instruments and learn the basics of dance for theater.  In class we will act out Bible stories and songs to learn some of the basics of drama.  This class is for the youngest performer and will be adapted to meet the needs of the students in the class.  The primary goal is feeling comfortable on stage and having a great time.  Parents are welcome to attend with their children to make this class a great experience.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Jo Anne Kroll
