Enrichment Hub Fall 2014 Classe Descriptions

Times are listed in class description.  Production 11/21, after scheduled classes.  This is such a great way to show what they’ve learned to Daddy, Grandma, etc., on stage.

* Classes are held Fridays, 10 weeks, unless noted in description.  
* In case of inclement weather, please see Troy Schools for closings.  If they are closed for weather, so are we, as our building is on their schedule of weather closings.  We are not on their schedule for days off or vacations.  
* Classes are non-refundable and non-transferrable once registered, unless extreme circumstances.  Thank you for honoring the program and instructors in this manner.
* Registration is required in advance to ensure your child’s placement, to ensure classes run, and to prepare the instructor for their class.  Enrollment is on a first come, first serve basis.  See registration form for details.
* Note we offer a Fall, Winter and Spring term at Enrichment Hub.  Some classes need continuance for a credit, most do not.  Registrations are separate for each term.  $10 registration fee per family per term, not per person.  No other fees besides the ones mentioned here.

High School Biology, Part 1 12:20-1:15, ages 14 & up, $58 plus $10 supply fee
This class will be taught in 2 parts, which will give a high school student a full science credit in Biology.  Part 1 will be taught this term, covering what is Biology, the cell, prokaryotes and viruses, protists, fungi, organic chemistry, genetics, creation vs. evolution, and ecology.  Part 2 will be taught in the Winter term.  Each week students will be required to do reading, definitions, and review questions at home.  In class, we will discuss the answers to their homework and do a lab related to the topic we are studying.  There are also 2 optional exams per term (these are for marking by the parent, Tracy provides the answer key).  Due to the fact that this is a high school credit class, this class will involve a scientific discussion of the organs that are part of the reproductive system (part 2).  We will be discussing these organs in a very scientific manner.   However, if you wish you may choose for your student to skip this section. IMPROV and THEATRE TEENS, 12:20-1:15, ages 13 & up, $72
Come explore Improvisation and Theatre with games and exercises for creating comedic and dramatic characters and scripts.  These free the actor's imagination, building ensemble, and honing concentration and focus.  Children will perform a fun piece in the production on 11/21.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Greg Trzaskoma

Robotics, Programming 10:50-11:45, ages 12 & up, $58 plus $10 supply fee, BYO Laptop
In this continuing class we'll use motors to propel small vehicles, and learn ways to control them using either switches or programmable microchips.  New and returning students welcome, we will continue learning new things each term.  Instructor:  Jared Piro

Intro to Databases, 9:50-10:45, ages 12 & up, $58, BYO Laptop
In this class we will learn the basics of databases. We will learn about tables and how to store data in them. We'll learn about the relationships between data and how to build them using sql.  Instructor:  Jared Piro

Wars of America, 9:50-10:45, ages 12 & up, $58
Take a relevant, fascinating look at some of the monumental struggles in America's history.  How did we get involved? What was at stake? What context in history, legacy and perhaps most important, moral lessons are to be learned? This course aims to show the truth of America's overall positive contributions to World history and when things are worth fighting for.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Doug Kuhn

Great Battles of America, 12:20-1:15, ages 12 & up, $58
A factual insight into how a single event, individual, or sheer Providence can alter the course of such an important historical happening as a battle.  Each battle will be looked at in its historical context, influence on the course of war and overall impact on history itself, for both good or evil.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Doug Kuhn

Great American Leaders, 10:50-11:45, ages 12 & up, $58
This class will feature a look into the actual, incredible tales of great men and women who left us our special legacy here in America.  We will delve into how their character, God-given qualities and beliefs made them who they were and allowed them to impact history itself.  This course intends to teach the true stories that are often more fantastic than any tall tale could ever be.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Doug Kuhn

Intro to Voice Lessons, various times, ages 10 & up, $17.50 a lesson, $157.50
Learn the Basics of Vocal Technique, including correct vowel formation, breathing, posture, vocal range, and how to pick a song.  Come prepared with a song to sing and a recording device.  Email request for this class to schedule time.  9 weeks.  Instructor: Gina Holben

Candy Making, 10:50-11:45, ages 10 & up, 9 weeks, $53 plus $28 supply fee
From our fantastic Cake Decorating instructor, learn the basics of candy making.   Process will include how to work with candy, using molds, dipping, molding candy clay and more.  Each week student will take home their completed project.  Note:  no class 10/17.  Instructor:  Cindy Giraud



Art with Carmen, Architectural Wonders, 1:30-2:40, ages 10 & up, 9 weeks, $64 + $18
Architectural drawing with technical drawing combined class.  The student will learn how to draw in perspective, using rulers and compass as they get their inspiration from the Empire State Building, an Xavier del Bac Mission, the White House, Gate Way arch, Trinity Church, The Jefferson Monticello, the Golden Gate, Disney concert Hall and more.  Bring a picture of your favorite building and draw it in Pencil.  Note:  No class 10/10.  Instructor:  Artist and Architect, Carmen Fernandez

Speech! (Public Speaking), 9:50-10:45, ages 10 & up, $72
Students will learn the basics of making speeches and speaking in public.  They will write and perform their own speeches on topics of their choice.  Instructor:  Greg Trzaskoma

The Art of Voice and Diction, 1:30-2:25, ages 10 & up, 9 weeks, $64
Voice and Diction for young people.  An exploration of the voice and strength and projection and breath support and diction and clarity and resonance.  Instructor:  Greg Trzaskoma

Mosaic Art, 9:50-10:45 or 1:25-2:20, ages 10 & up, $72 plus $15 supply fee
New and returning students welcome.  Mosaic is the art of creating a design by arranging small pieces of a chosen material to create the “bigger picture”.  Learn the basics and create beautiful work of art using different materials from abstract to tiles!  From beginner through more advanced artists.  Note 1:25 has no class on 11/21.  Instructor:  Jennifer Combs

Middle School Life Science, Plants and Animals, 9:50-10:45, ages 10-14, $58 plus $15
This class will be taught in 2 parts.  This term will focus on plant and animal biology.  Topics covered include:  Intro to Life Science, cells one-celled organisms, protists, fungi, invertebrates, vertebrates, plant and ecology.  Each week students will be required to complete a short reading assignment with review questions at home.  In class, we will go over the answers to the questions and do a lab related to that week’s topic.  This class will have in-class access to a virtual dissection program called Froguts.  Instructor:  Tracy Mitton

Cross Fit, 1:30-2:25, ages 9-13, 9 weeks, $53
Grow up healthy and strong with a lifelong love of working out, thus avoiding the common problems associated with childhood inactivity and obesity!  Children will push, pull, run, throw, climb, lift, jump, effectively and safely, regardless of whether or not they play athletics.  During this program, the coach will educate your child on the importance of making their bodies powerful, enriching their minds, building strong character, creating rewarding experiences, and developing a sense of pride.  We require that kids wear tennis shoes for this program.  Parents welcome!  New and returning students welcome.  Note:  no class 11/21, production day.  Instructor:  Jeremey Ouellette

Art with Carmen, Natural Wonders of USA, 9:35-10:45, ages 9 & up, 9 weeks, $64 + $15
From the Death Valley National Park, the Grand Canyon, Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii, Mount McKinley, the Niagara Falls, Old Faithful, the Rocky Mountains, Sequoia National Park, Yosemite Valley, bring a picture of your favorite wonder and make your own palette from dessert colors, deep and light blues, learning how to draw and paint in oil paints on stretch canvas!  New and returning students always welcome.  Note:  No class 10/10.  Instructor:  Artist and Architect Carmen Fernandez

Art with Carmen, Ceramic Fine Art, 10:50-12:00, ages 9 & up, 9 weeks, $64 + $18
BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS AND BIRDS OF AMERICA ON CERAMIC FINE ART PAINTING.  This course will teach you how to paint flowers and make a composition to paint a plate and/or its mug.  From a Camellia with pinks, a California poppy with its yellows and oranges, Forget-me-nots with the most beautiful blues, mountain laurel, Peach blossom and much more!  Note:  No class 10/10.  Instructor:  Artist and Architect Carmen Fernandez

Art with Carmen, Beautiful Bridges of USA, 12:20-1:25, ages 9 & up, 9 weeks, $64 + $15
Draw and paint one of the most amazing bridges.  Choose from the Golden Gate Bridge with its bright reds, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and its reflection on the water, the Verrazano Narrows Bridge at night, the beautiful Mackinac Bridge in fall sunset, the Delaware Memorial Bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge, and more.  The artist will have an opportunity to learn how to draw a bridge, and get inspired of its water colors and sky colors.  Bring a picture of your favorite bridge and be ready to paint with oil paints on a stretch canvas.  Note:  No class 10/10.  Instructor:  Artist and Architect Carmen Fernandez

Sing Out!  12:20, ages 8 and up, $58 plus $10

Nature Journaling (CM style), 1:30-2:25, ages 8 & up, 9 weeks, $53 plus $6 supply fee
“The sense of beauty comes from early contact with nature.” – Charlotte Mason.  Come learn to observe the beauty of God’s creation in nature study.  Dress for the weather, we will be out in whatever weather is available to us.  We will observe, collect and document our findings in our own personal nature journals.  We will use watercolor paint, pencil drawings, and colored pencils to document your discoveries.  If Mom/Dad wants to make their own journals they can do that too.  Instructor:  Angelique Van Hooser

Guitar, Group Lessons, 12:20, ages 8 & up, $72, BYO Guitar
A group guitar class including tuning, notation, chords, strumming patterns, and more!  Beginners and beyond are welcome.   Acoustic/electric reviewed.  Bring your own guitar, or recommendations for rental are available.  New and returning students always welcome.  Instructor:  Neal Wright

Cake Decorating, 9:50, ages 8 & up, 9 weeks, $53 plus $30 supply fee
Learn the basics of cake decorating, from applying icing to designing a cake. From different borders, several flowers, figure piping, & more, students will learn different techniques.  Students will bring home cakes & cupcakes on specific weeks, and will display their final cake during production, before bringing it home.  Note: no class 10/17.  Instructor:  Cindy Giraud

Cake Decorating-Intermediate, 12:20, ages 8 & up, 9 weeks, $53 plus $30 supply fee
Building on the skills learned in Cake Decorating, students will learn new techniques using butter cream icing, royal icing, & fondant. Techniques include: covering a cake with fondant, fondant flowers, royal icing flowers and accents, brushed embroidery, basket weave, the rose and more.  Students will bring home cakes & cupcakes on specific weeks, and will display their final cake during production before bringing it home.  Prerequisite - completion of Cake Decorating or equivalent experience.  Note:  no class 10/17.  Instructor:  Cindy Giraud

Ukulele lessons!  10:50-11:45, ages 8 & up, $72, BYO Ukulele
Want to strum to a tune?  A ukulele is a simple instrument to start with, and what beautiful music it makes!  This group ukulele class includes tuning, notation, chords, strumming patterns, and more!  Beginners and beyond are welcome.   Bring your own ukelele.  New and returning students always welcome.  Instructor:  Neal Wright

Hip Hop!  Intermediate and Up, 10:50, ages 8 & up, $72
Experience requested.  Let’s move!  An awesome class for all, with clean lyrics!  In hip-hop we will be focusing on the rhythm and the beat of the music, coordinating our movements to go with that beat, and incorporating other styles of dance.  Please wear comfortable fitting shorts/pants and t-shirts with clean tennis shoes or jazz shoes.  Instructor:  Jennifer Combs

Chess, Beginner, 1:30-2:25, ages 7-15, $58 plus $10 book
The class will involve playing chess with the instructor, giving advice, group instruction of chess tactics, and introduction of tournament rules. Students will learn the proper use of a chess clock and how to record a chess game. Students will receive a workbook in which homework of 15 minutes per week will be given. Chess sets and clocks are provided. Appropriate for students who know how to play chess, but have never taken a class and for students who have never played before.  Instructor: Alexander Deatrick, US Chess Expert and Candidate Master

Chess, Intermediate, 12:20-1:15, ages 7-15, $58
If students have taken a chess class with Alexander before, they should take this class. We will review in order to assess how well students remember previous material, and then we will delve into more complicated ideas such as opening theory, longer forced checkmates, and combinations. Chess sets and clocks are provided. Workbook is $10 (students pay for it on the first day of class); if students still have theirs from a previous session they do not need to purchase another.  Instructor: Alexander Deatrick, US Chess Expert and Candidate Master

Marching through America! 10:50-11:45, age 7 & up, $58
Have you ever wanted to know how the music we listen to today became what it is? This class will be taking a trip through history while looking at the music of America.  We will be looking at Yankee Doodle, Star Spangled Banner, John Phillip Sousa, Ragtime, Musical Theatre, Blues, and more! We will be listening to music, playing instruments, moving around, and composing music.  Instructor: Gina Holben

Ballet with Mrs. Samantha!  10:50-11:45, ages 7 & up, $58
A class for children who may or may not have experience in dance.  Ballet technique is the foundation for every style of dance; jazz, modern, ballroom, and even hip-hop!  Girls: Pink or black Leotard, Pink or white Tights, Ballet Shoes.  Boys: White T-Shirt, black light cotton pants (no sweats), ballet shoes.  All long hair pulled back securely in a ponytail or bun, please no hair in face.  Instructor:  Samantha Woychowski

Secret Codes!  12:20-1:15, ages 7-11, $58
Learn to decode Braille, Morse Code, symbolic and alpha-numeric codes using Bible verses.  Pass secret messages to others in the class with a new code each week!  On the last week, use all you have learned to unravel the mysteries behind a treasure map with a waiting surprise!  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Jo Anne Kroll

Science, God Made the Plants, the Animals, and You, 10:50-11:45, ages 6-9, $58 plus $8
Learn plant parts, types of plants, how to grow them, and what their purpose is by God's design.  Study different types of animals, the habitats they live in and their habitat purpose.  What about you?  We will discuss the following systems of the body: Digestion, Sensory, Skeletal, Muscular, Cardiovascular, and Respiratory.  All of these topics will have neat experiments to go along with a cool human body lap book. This lap book will not contain anything, which references the reproductive organs, as we feel that those conversations should happen within the family unit and not in this class.  Instructor:  Tracy Mitton

Let’s dance!  Tap dancing encourages rhythm, synchronization, precision, and teamwork.  Dress ready to dance, NO long bell bottomed pants or dresses/skirts that fall under the knee, please.  Long hair should be pulled back securely.  New and returning students welcome.  Tap shoes are required, but the instructor may have a pair you can borrow for the term.  Instructor:  Deanna Irwin

Lyrical Ballet with Samantha, 1:30-2:25, ages 6 & up, 9 weeks, $53
Lyrical ballet offers a beautiful style dance with its own set of steps and technique.  Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet forms, using more fluid story-telling movements while incorporating technique and style.  Please wear leotard under dance pants or ballet skirt, with jazz shoes or barefoot.  Note no class 11/21, production day.  Instructor:  Samantha Woychowski

Tap/Ballet Combination 12:20-1:15, ages 6 & up, $58

American Girl History with Addy, 9:50-10:45, ages 6 & up, $58 plus $6 supply fee
Each week we will read and encompass a portion of "Meet Addy" the American girl.  We will make crafts as a class and learn about the time period, listen to music from the era and study cultural differences and family traditions.  The final class will include a traditions party, allowing each girl to share her own cultural and family traditions with the class.  Instructor:  Jo Anne Kroll

Private or Semi-Private Piano Lesson, ages 6 to 100, $17.50/lesson, Times TBD
Learn how to read notes, play songs by ear, music theory, piano technique, and even create your own song!  Gina Holben has a Master’s Degree in Music Education and 15 years of experience teaching piano. You may need to bring a Portable Piano Keyboard to class. New and returning students welcome, or share this class with a friend!  30 minute lessons.  Instructor: Gina Holben

Cooking 4 Kids, 1:30-2:25, ages 6 & up, 9 weeks, $53 plus $8 supply fee
This class will focus on simple meals and snacks your child can create with little or no parental help.  Safety, hygiene and responsibility go hand in hand with the food groups in this class.  We will make a different recipe each week.  Note:  No class 11/21, production day.  Instructor:  JoAnne Kroll

Spanish Fun Continues, 10:50, ages 5-9, $58
Continued from fall 2013, students are welcome to grow their knowledge in a fun, easy, and interesting way with visuals, games, books, etc.  Whether your child knows a little Spanish or a lot, they will enjoy this class.  Formerly from Guatemala, been here since 1996, a U.S. citizen, and giving back in the community by teaching others her mother tongue.  Her motto, “Learn a little, use it a lot,” will help students grow in their Spanish language.   New and returning students welcome.  Instructor, Carolina Hood

Do you want to learn the basics of piano to teach your child?  Learn the piano ABC’s, basics of finger technique, and songs you can play at home with your children. We will sing, dance, and play piano! Gina has a Master’s Degree in Music Education and 15 years of experience teaching piano.  Adult participation is required. Instructor: Gina Holben

Adventures in Arts & Crafts!  9:50-10:45, ages 3-6, $58 plus $5 supply fee
From the amazing Adventures in Literature instructor comes a new arts & crafts class!  We will work on a fun new craft every week using many different mediums.  Come ready to get a bit crafty!  Rolling up your sleeves and bringing one of your dad’s old t-shirts to wear is a great cover up idea.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Amanda Gehrke

Adventures in Literature, 10:50, ages 3–6, $58
Each week we'll enjoy the adventures of a classic children's book, and then enjoy activities that go along with our story.  We'll play games, create art projects and explore social studies, math and science concepts from the story.  Always a new subject, every term!  Instructor:  Amanda Gehrke

Broadway Babies, 10:50, ages 3-5, $58
Combine music, dance and drama into one class.  We will sing songs, play with instruments and learn the basics of dance for theater.  In class we will act out Bible stories and songs to learn some of the basics of drama.  This class is for the youngest performer and will be adapted to meet the needs of the students in the class.  The primary goal is feeling comfortable on stage and having a great time.  Parents are welcome to attend with their children to make this class a great experience.  New and returning students welcome.  Instructor:  Jo Anne Kroll
