2010 Winter Class Descriptions

Enrichment Hub Winter 2010 Classes, by age/class (guideline ages):

Classes run Fridays, in Troy, MI, 10 weeks, unless noted. Christ-centered classes, open to all.

Dates: 1/22, 1/29, 2/5, 2/19, 2/26, 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 4/9, 4/16 (4/23 “snow date”). Times are below.

Production: 4/16, 2-4 PM. Invite family/friends to share your journey.

Video Production, advanced, ages 12 & up, 9:50, $56

This semester we will take the next step in video production and focus on the mechanics of non-linear, or computer based editing. The students will learn the basics of importing video, setting up a timeline, manipulating the video, and then exporting the final product. Students with a laptop and any type of editing software are encouraged to bring their equipment to class with them. This is not a weak class, techies enjoy! Note: students will be offered a “field trip” behind the scenes of a real KCC service. Check out a service at www.kensingtonchurch.org to see how high tech they are! Drama! ages 9 – 16, 9:50, $56

A fun Drama class of verbal and non-verbal communication form. Students will come up with their own ideas of who, what, where, creative situations, character development, pantomime, facial expressions and gestures, creating a script through this fashion. Skills mastered will be used in production at the end of course. Instructor: Katie Beth Hostetter, Director of Urban Arts, Detroit.

Still Life Drawing, ages 10 & up, 9:50, 10:50, $70 plus $10 supply fee

Students will start out learning to draw, shade, model and highlight, using charcoal vine. We will manipulate this medium with our hands, towel, and rubber eraser to pull out and draw our still life. We will look at other artists’ still life art in history, and how they conveyed emotion and movement through line and color. Students will choose and study a color palette from Van Gogh for their final still life in full color. Instructor: Karen Walby

Vocal Technique II, ages 12 & up, 9 weeks, 9:50, $55

Want to improve your vocal skills? The focus for this class is on pitch accuracy, breath control, projection, basic anatomy of the voice, and vocal health. We will use fun and easy vocal exercises to help in our daily recognition of pitch, while growing as singers. Every week, we will be singing in front of our peers and learning how to give constructive criticism to help grow as individual teachers. In addition, we will focus on a performance piece to grow and move forward as singers. At semester end, there will be a mini performance in front of your peers, and you may be selected to sing in our E Hub Production. Note: no Vocal on 3/19, Sara’s Wedding Day!! Myth Debunkers Science, ages 8 and up, 9:50, $56

In this class, we will be conducting experiments to determine if things we’ve accepted as fact are really true. Patterned after the Discovery Channel hit series, “Myth Busters” (less the explosives) but on a smaller scale. We will teach accepted scientific methods for conducting experiments and analyzing data. Instructor: Steve Bade

It’s Your Life, ages 12 & up, 9:50, $95 plus $5 supply fee

Where will you be at age 25? Students will expand their knowledge of spreadsheets, and learn valuable life lessons as they imagine themselves as an adult. Each student will start a new job with a salary. Some will work on Wall Street, in a retail store, be married, and may even have children as they envision their own lives. At this point, they will learn to budget their money and pay their bills! School never looked so good! Instructor: Sue Osis, Computer Explorers.

Guitar, group, acoustic or electric, ages 8 & up, 9:50, 10:50, and 12:20, $70

A group guitar class including tuning, notation, chords, strumming patterns & more! Beginners and a bit beyond are welcome. Acoustic/electric reviewed. In Mr. Matt’s class, purchase of $15 book is required. In Mr. Neal’s class, no purchase of book is necessary. Bring your own guitar, or recommendations for rental are available. US Made Leaders, ages 9 & up, 9:50, 10:50, $55 plus $8 supply fee.

Learn leadership building and “soft-skill” development. Instructor provides them with the opportunity to mature with these skills into and through adolescence, rather than learning them for the first time as adults, offering a priceless early advantage in a highly competitive and ever-changing future. Praise and Worship! (PAW) ages 6-12, 9:50, 12:20, $56

We are called to worship God with every action, every day of our life. A life of praise and worship fills our deepest needs, and amazingly, it also brings great joy to God. In this class, children will explore a variety of different ways to worship including singing, playing instruments, creative prayer, dance, scripture, and other creative expression. Special needs are welcome. Instructor: Ashley Verville

English Fun and Games, ages 6 – 10, 9:50, $56

Use hands-on activities to practice English with your peers. Have fun with parts of speech, diagramming, composition, syntax and vocabulary. All games will be played for fun rewards & prizes. Instructor: Teri Bade

Mini Ballet, ages 5 and up, 9:50, $56

Plié, Tendue, Dégagée, and Sauté! These are some of the beginning steps of dance. Ballet technique is the foundation for every style of dance; modern, jazz, ballroom, and even hip-hop! Build your foundation in beginner ballet class where we will have fun learning how to move like the Sugar Plum fairy. And it’s great exercise, too! Attire: Girls—tights and leotard, ballet shoes. Boys—t-shirt and biking/gymnastic shorts, ballet shoes. All long hair pulled back securely in a ponytail or bun, please no hair in face. Instructor: Miss Nancy Andrews

Broadway Babies, ages 3 – 6, 9:50, $56

Grow your child’s dancing, singing, and acting skills in an interactive way! The primary basis of the class is to learn music and drama techniques, while learning and memorizing 2 – 3 songs with choreography. A great introduction to these elements for your child! Instructor: Mindy Corder

American Sign Language, ages 9 through adult, 10:50; 5 through adult, 12:20, $56

Take this awesome class with your family, or without. Based on American Sign Language, learn or continue learning a new language to reach your community. What a wonderful addition to your homeschooling journey. Instructor: Deb Weathers-Jablonski

Art with Carmen, ages 9 & up, 10:30-11:45 and 12:20-1:35, $88 plus $15 supply fee

Experience the beauty of creating, drawing, mixing colors and have all of this artistic you in a canvas!! Technique: oil on canvas, various mediums. Learn how to draw detail, down to a drop of water, close up on various objects. Bring an object from home weekly to be in your painting. This can be a 3d object, or an amazing photo close-up. Note class is hour and 15 minutes. Instructor: Carmen Fernandez, Arquitect and amazing art teacher for 20 years.

Green Screen Adventures, ages 9 and up, 10:50, $115 plus $5 supply fee

Climb Mount Everest, swim the depths of the ocean, or battle the dinosaurs! Using a green screen and special photo-editing techniques, you will venture into real or imaginary locations and film the trip to share with friends. Experiment with photos and unique drawing software to set the scene for fantastic adventures. Don’t stay at home – jump into a green screen and find yourself some fun! Contemporary Jazz, ages 8 and up, 10:50, $56

From Broadway to the movies, jazz has can be found anywhere. Come and begin learning some fun steps to do around the room and to put together into full-length dances. We will begin learning everything from Bob Fosse’s famous Broadway style to some of the newest trends in Jazz; how to saché and pas-de-bourré while getting some energy out! Attire: Girls—tights or jazz pants and leotard, jazz shoes. Boys—t-shirt and athletic shorts, jazz shoes. All long hair pulled back securely in a ponytail or bun, please no hair in face. Instructor: Miss Nancy Andrews

Model Rocketry, ages 7 & up, 10:50, $56 plus $10 lab fee.

The student will build and launch a rocket (multiple launches, weather permitting). Join our group and design your own rocket! Repeaters, welcome! We are building different rockets. Lab fee covers rocket, engines and all launch equipment. Note: no rocketry class on 9/18. Instructor: Steve Bade

Let’s Play the Recorder, ages 7 and up, 10:50, $56

Learn beginning music notation, fingerings, rhythm and playing simple songs with games, prizes, and lots of fun with this great wind instrument! Recorders available for sale, or bring your own. Instructor: Teri Bade

Drama Kidz, ages 5 – 9, 10:50, $56

Musical Blessings, ages 2-5, 10:50, 9 weeks, $51

This class will help younger children to recognize and hear sounds we hear everyday, such as animals and identify other sounds discussed in class. Also using musical games to help the young students recognize if a pitch is high, low, soft, smooth, bouncing, in addition to finding and keeping a steady beat (as best as possible). This class will help the children grow aurally as well as musically. Note: no class 3/19, Sara’s Wedding Day!! Instructor: Sara Williams

Advanced Model Rocketry, ages 12 & up, 12:20, $55 plus $10 lab fee

The Advanced Model students (approved by Steve Bade) will build and launch a multi-stage rocket (multiple launches, weather permitting). Join our group and design your rocket. Learn what makes a rocket stable in flight, plot the path of the rocket, and calculate its altitude with home-made instruments. Lab fee covers rocket, engines and all launch equipment. Instructor: Steve Bade

French, with Miss Nancy! ages 7 through adult, 12:20, $70

Allons-y! On y va à la France! Come and be introduced to the French language and culture in a relaxed, fun-centered environment where learning happens by experiencing. We will focus on beginning languages skills, cultural facts, and just a pinch of history thrown in for fun. Start learning one of the most important languages in the world, spoken on every continent (except Antarctica) and the secretarial language of the EU and UN; the language of Hugo, Monet, and Napolean. Instructor: Nancy Andrews

Machine Doctor Skills, ages 8 and up, $55 plus $8 supply fee

This class introduces students to the basic skills of diagnoses and repair. Subjects will touch on carpentry, electrical and mechanical. This is a hands-on class. Students will use small hand tools and have instruction in the safe use of Power Drills and Drivers. NO SAWS.

Lego Junior Engineering, ages 6 – 9, $95 plus $5 supply fee

This course will introduce LEGO component parts and how they can be used to make several simple machines and motorize them. After guided exploration to understand basic concepts, children will be challenged to pretend they’re an engineer who works for LEGO and are given a kit with many parts. Their job will be to “build something cool that moves!” Students learn to work as a team and work in groups of 2-3 students. Instructor: Sue Osis, Computer Explorers

Violin, Group, ages 8 & up, 12:20, $56

Fine arts instructor Katie Beth offers lessons in a small group setting. Suzuki method, performance technique, and traditional methods are all taught in the lesson. Bring your violin, or recommendations for rental are available. Instructor: Katie Beth Hostetter, Director of Urban Arts, Detroit

Children’s Chorus, ages 6 – 11, 9 weeks, 12:20, $51

This class is a vocal music ensemble with focus on group participation, while growing as young musicians. Learn how to work together vocally to sing in tune, producing beautiful music. Simple melodies, pitch placement, some music theory, and a final performance as a group will be the focus of this class. The E-Hub Chorus is a fun and musical way to nurture peer and individual growth. Note: no Vocal on 3/19, Sara’s Wedding Day!! Instructor, Sara Williams

Young Creative Art, ages 3 - 6, 10:50, $56

A fun filled art class for the little ones! We will have a great time creating projects and exploring art at their level with a variety of different techniques and textures. From paint to clay and beyond, we will create little works of art. Parents are welcome to stay and join their child in creating. Instructor: Teri Bade

Guitar, private lessons, ages 8 & Up, $20/lesson, various times. Group rates available.

Enjoy acoustic or electric guitar private lessons with timing that varies upon your needs. Bring your own guitar, or recommendations for rental are available. If 2 or more students coordinate time, discounts are offered. Amazing deal! Other times available, just ask. Instructor(s): Neal Wright
