Fall 2009 Class Descriptions

Enrichment Hub Fall 2009 Classes, by age/class (guideline ages):

Classes run Fridays, in Troy, MI, 11 weeks, unless noted. Christ-centered classes, open to all.
Dates: 9/18, 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6, 11013, 11/20, 12/4, times below.
Production 12/4, 2-3:30. Invite family/friends to share your journey.

Introduction to Digital Photography, ages 9 - adult: 9:50, 10:50, and 12:20, $76
Learn the basics of both photography and digital photography. We will cover how a camera works as well as all the equipment necessary to be success in photography. Students will go on a field trip and practice shooting, giving each a chance to apply concepts learned in class. After the trip, students will send in pictures for review in our final class. To get the most out of this class, it is recommended that you have a camera. Although this course is an intro to digital photography, students with film cameras will be able to gain valuable knowledge as well. Video Production, ages 12 & up, 9:50, $61
NEW CLASS!! Students will gain an overview of production, studio camera operations, understanding direction in a multi-camera setting, lighting, basic camera engineering. They will shoot and edit a commercial. This is not a weak class, techies enjoy! Note: students will be offered a “field trip” behind the scenes of a real KCC service. History, Immigration to our Nation, 8th grade through adult, 9:50, $61
Learn with other teens exploring immigration history. Learn in which manners people come to the US legally and unlawfully. Analyze, evaluate, and discuss how this affects our every day lives. Assignments will include current events and researching the own path in which your family immigrated to the USA. A great class for future careers in Law Enforcement (police officers, attorneys and community leaders). Instructor: Tracey Cooley Kevelighan, attorney & homeschool mom.

Advanced Model Rocketry, ages 12 & up, 10 weeks, 10:50, $55 plus $10 lab fee
The Advanced Model students will build and launch a rocket (multiple launches, weather permitting). Join our group and design your rocket. Learn what makes a rocket stable in flight, plot the path of the rocket, and calculate its altitude with home-made instruments. Lab fee covers rocket, engines and all launch equipment. Note: no rocketry class 9/18. Instructor: Steve Bade

Robotics 1 w/NXT, ages 12 & up, 12:20, $115, plus $5 supply fee
Get ready to take control! Using the NXT brick from LEGO, students will build robots, program them to accomplish tasks, respond to external stimuli, and overcome challenges. Students will control the robot with the NXT programming language, and learn fundamental software programming techniques. Get your brain in gear and your robots moving in this course. Musical Theatre Dance with Mrs. Nancy, ages 8 & up, 12:20, $76
Let’s dance! This dance class will explore dance styles from various Broadway or movie musicals. Girls: leotard, tights or leggings, jazz or ballet shoes. Boys: white t-shirt, black light cotton pants or athletic shorts, ballet shoes or socks. Instructor: Nancy Mattar


Teen Chorus! Ages 12 & up, 10 weeks, 10:50, $55
Join a vocal music ensemble with focus on group participation, growth as a musician, and knowledge of how to sing in tune to produce beautiful music in 3 - 4 part harmony. Simple melodies, pitch placement, sight singing, simple ear training, and a final performance. The E-Hub Chorus is a fun and musical way to nurture peer and individual growth. Field trip(s) offered at end of semester, including Caroling (optional). Note: no Chorus on 10/9. Instructor: Sara Williams

Vocal Technique, 12 & up, 10 weeks, 9:50, $55
Want to improve your vocal skills? The focus for this class is on pitch accuracy, breath control, projection, basic anatomy of the voice, and vocal health. We will use fun and easy songs to help in our daily recognition of pitch, while growing as singers. At semester end, there will be a mini performance in front of your peers, and you may be selected to sing in our E Hub Production. Note: no Vocal on 10/9. Instructor, Sara Williams

Claymation Cinema, ages 10 & Up, 10:50, $115 + $5 supply fee
Students will perfect their skills as claymation cinematographers as they create their unique productions. Using the same tools used by today’s best known animators, this course will spark their imaginations & give them the tools to bring their ideas to life. Instructor: Sue Osis, Computer Explorers

Art with Carmen, ages 9 & up, 10:30-11:45 and 12:20-1:35, $88 plus $15 supply fee
Experience the beauty of creating, drawing, mixing colors and have all of this artistic you in a canvas!! Technique: oil on canvas, various mediums. What is a mural? - a message in two different prospectives. Learn about Muralists Michaelangelo, Diego Rivera, Sicairos, Orzco, then design and paint a mural. Note class is hour and 15 minutes. Instructor: Carmen Fernandez, Arquitect and amazing art teacher for 20 years.

American Sign Language, ages 9 through adult, 10:50, $61
Take this awesome class with your family, or without. Based on American Sign Language, learn or continue learning a new language to reach your community. What a wonderful addition to your homeschooling journey. Instructor: Deb Weathers-Jablonski.

Drama! ages 9 – 16, 9:50, $61
A fun Drama class of verbal and non-verbal communication form. Students will come up with their own ideas of who, what, where, creative situations, character development, pantomime, facial expressions and gestures, creating a script through this fashion. Skills mastered will be used in production at the end of course. Instructor: Katie Beth Hostetter, Director of Urban Arts, Detroit.

Hip Hop, Intermediate, with Miss Vicki, ages 8 & up, 9:50, $61
This class continues hip-hop dance knowledge, focusing on the rhythm and the beat of the music and coordinating our movement to go with the beat. We will incorporate other styles of clean, appropriate urban dance that improve hip-hop dance. Please wear loose fitting pants and t-shirts with clean tennis shoes. Instructor: Vicki Kubinski.

No experience required. Let’s move! An awesome class for all, with clean lyrics! In hip-hop we will be focusing on the rhythm and the beat of the music and coordinating our movements to go with that beat, incorporating other styles of dance. US Made Leaders, ages 9 & up, 12:20 – 1:35, $61 plus $8 supply fee.
Learn leadership building and “soft-skill” development. Instructor provides them with the opportunity to mature with these skills into and through adolescence, rather than learning them for the first time as adults, offering a priceless early advantage in a highly competitive and ever-changing future. Guitar, group, acoustic or electric, ages 8 & up, 9:50, 10:50, and 12:20, $76
A group guitar class including tuning, notation, chords, strumming patterns & more! Beginners and a bit beyond are welcome. Acoustic/electric reviewed. Bring your own guitar, or recommendations for rental are available. Instructor(s): Neal Wright

Guitar, private lessons, ages 8 & Up, $20/lesson, various times. Group rates available.

Violin, Group, ages 8 & up, 12:20, $76
Fine arts instructor Katie Beth offers lessons in a small group setting. Suzuki method, performance technique, and traditional methods are all taught in the lesson. Learn Spanish through age appropriate song, games, print outs, and scripture memorization. Well loved class, always review while adding something new. Instructor: Jeannie Wilgus

Video Game Design, ages 9-12, 9:50, $100
Students will become Video Game Designers as they use a specialized program to create a 2-D video game. In this class, girls and boys create their own characters and show them what to do, while creating simulations and games completely visually, without a programming language. Students will work to complete various programming challenges and eventually create their own games. Students may purchase (optional) software, $35, to continue creating at home! Good Vibrations, ages 7 & up, 10 weeks, 9:50, $55
A study of how different musical instruments make their sound. The class will make instruments and discuss the relation between pitch and vibrations. It will be a fun and informative class! Note: no vibrations class on 9/18. Instructor: Steve Bade

Praise and Worship! (PAW) ages 6-12, 12:20, $61
We are called to worship God with every action, every day of our life. A life of praise and worship fills our deepest needs, and amazingly, it also brings great joy to God. In this class, children will explore a variety of different ways to worship including singing, playing instruments, creative prayer, dance, scripture, and other creative expression. Special needs are welcome. Instructor: Deb Weathers-Jablonski

Beginning Recorder, ages 7 and up, 12:20, $55
Learn beginning music notation, fingerings, rhythm and playing simple songs with games, prizes, and lots of fun! Recorders available for sale, or bring your own. Instructor: Teri Bade

American Sign Language, ages 5 through adult, 9:50, $61

Learn Science through age appropriate, hands-on experiments focused on God's design. Children will take home info to enjoy repeating their new knowledge with their family. Note: no science class on 12/4. Instructor: Tricia Ouellette

Drama Kidz, ages 5 – 9, 10:50, $61
A fun Drama class of verbal and non-verbal communication form. Broadway Juniors, ages 5 – 8, 9:50, $61
An interactive class to grow your child’s singing, dancing,, and acting skills. The primary basis of the class is to learn music and drama techniques, while learning and memorizing 2 – 3 songs with choreography. A great introduction to these elements for your child! Instructor: Mindy Corder

Children’s Chorus, ages 5 – 11, 10 weeks, 12:20, $55
This class is a vocal music ensemble with focus on group participation, while growing as young musicians. Learn how to work together vocally to sing in tune, producing beautiful music. Math Games, ages 6 – 10, 10 weeks, 9:50, $55
Use hands-on activities to practice math concepts with your peers. Have fun with fractions, percentages, borrowing, carrying, skip counting, roots, primes, add-ins, and speed games. All games will be played for fun rewards & prizes. Note: no math class on 9/18. Instructor: Teri Bade


Spanish Fun, ages 5 - 9, 10:50, $76

Young Creative Art, ages 3 - 6, 10 weeks, 10:50, $55
A fun filled art class for the little ones! We will have a great time creating projects and exploring art at their level with a variety of different techniques and textures. From paint to clay and beyond, we will create little works of art. Parents are welcome to stay and join their child in creating. Note: no art class on 9/18. Instructor: Teri Bade

Our amazing photographer, Christopher Belli, will be taking cool photos of our classes this term, and E Hub Production 12/4. He will critique photos with his photography students at E Hub, and create a DVD for us complete with background music from KCC’s vocal team. Awesome! Reserve your copy upon registration.
